Build/Design - The realme 12 Pro+ 5G uses a beautiful-looking Luxury Watch Design with faux leather material on the back. You can see the large camera hump with elegant reflection and will remind you of an expensive watch.

If you look on its body you'll also notice the golden strip line to add more style on the rear. In terms of frame, this one uses plastic material which makes it light at 196 grams. Furthermore, the phone uses 0.55mm reinforced glass to add some protection against accidental drops or at least prevent scratches.

Moving to Samsung Galaxy A55, it appears in traditional Galaxy design which the brand has been using for years. While it screams simplicity, others will always prefer a minimalist look providing a refreshing vibe to those who will gaze on the phone's back panel.

When it comes to its build it feels sturdier thanks to its aluminum metal frames. Moreover, the phone uses Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+ which has a reputation for being durable allowing it to sustain more bumps and drops in the long run over the phone mentioned above.

Display - When it comes to the screen, the realme 12 Pro+ 5G uses a 6.7-inch curved OLED panel with FHD+ 2412 x 1080 resolution at 395, 120Hz refresh rate, 240Hz touch sampling rate, 2160 PWM dimming, HDR10+  support, and 950 nits of max brightness.

The Samsung Galaxy A55 has a slightly smaller size of 6.6 inches and comes with a SUPER AMOLED panel. But this produces a brighter output with 1,000 nits of peak brightness.

Specs - Moving to performance, the realme 12 Pro+ is equipped with the 2.4GHz 4nm Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 octa-core processor with Adreno GPU. On paper, this seems to be the slightly weaker chip from Samsung's. But don't get us wrong, it is designed to handle mainstream tasks, fast and snappy photography experience, decent gaming, efficient power draw, and smooth overall performance.

For memory, this has 12GB RAM and bigger 512GB storage which means you have more space to use, more apps to use, and of course at a slightly higher price tag.

On the other hand, the Galaxy A55 uses the 2.75GHz 4nm Exynos 1480 8-core chip with AMD Xclipse 530 GPU. This is slightly higher than realme's and should also provide a smooth experience, slightly better gaming performance, and can handle popular gaming titles like Mobile Legends or Farlight 84. In addition, it has a dedicated NPU to handle the Galaxy AI task as one of the phone's highlights.

Although this has lower RAM at 8GB and storage at 256GB it is also slightly more affordable than realme.

In terms of battery, they both have 5,000mAh sizes. They differ in charging speeds as Samsung only gets 25W and without a free charger included. This is part of Samsung's move towards sustainability, but it may be a hassle for those who do not have a spare charger.

Meanwhile, realme has a faster charging speed at 67W SUPERVOOC. This means you'll have less waiting time when out of juice and the brand also offers a free charger inside the box.

Cameras - In this area, realme 12 Pro+ 5G features a 50MP Sony IMX890 main camera with OIS + 8MP f/2.2 ultra-wide sensor + 64MP f/2.8 OV64B 3x periscope zoom with OIS + LED flash.

Based on its hardware, this is clearly ahead of Samsung's, these sensors are also found on higher-end devices priced around 40K or above. It will allow users to take great portrait shots even when using optical zoom. In fact, it can even take up to 120x zoom ideal for concerts, moon shots, and other related scenarios.

For Samsung, it offers 50MP f/1.8 main camera with an OIS + 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide angle + 5MP macro shooter + LED flash. In this department, Samsung won't match what realme offers, however, you can get higher megapixels for ultra-wide shooting.

Other features - The realme 12 Pro+ features a 3D Vapor Chamber cooling system which means it can sustain its peak performance on demanding games. Less heat means less throttling.

It also has an In-Display fingerprint reader and an IP65 rating for water and dust resistance which should the phone handle some dirt or splashes. Further, it has Hi-Res Audio certification, Dolby Atmos, 2x microphones with noise cancellation.

On the other hand, the Galaxy A55 offers slightly better IP67 water resistance. Samsung even marketed it as being capable of surviving swimming pools and sands but of course with due diligence. It also has an In-Display fingerprint reader, Dolby Atmos Stereo speakers, and a cooling system 70 percent larger than the previous Galaxy A54.

For connectivity, both have WiFi 6, 5G SA/NSA, 4G Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, GPS, GLONASS, and dual SIM support.

realme 12 Pro+ 5G advantages - Ergonomic form, OLED screen, bigger RAM, storage, 67W fast charging, better camera hardware
Samsung Galaxy A55 - Aluminum frame, IP67 rating, Gorilla Glass Victus+, faster processor, 4 years OS updates

Our thoughts

Samsung Galaxy A55 offers a solid build, future proof with its 4 years of updates, slightly faster processor, and cost more affordable at PHP 24,999. You can also get it cheaper if you take advantage of trade-in promos of the brand.

Meanwhile, by paying higher at PHP 25,999, realme brings a premium leather design, curved display, bigger memory, faster charging, and stronger overall cameras unseen in its price point before.

If you were able to get its PHP 21,999 early bird promo or during special online price cuts on Lazada and Shopee, then it's an even better deal.

Both phones offer unique features in their own way. But for us, you'll get more value for money for realme's offering. Still, if you're short for that additional PHP 1K, the Galaxy A55 is a decent deal.

What do you guys think?
