Addressing driver's license backlog
Land Transportation Office chief Vigor Mendoza II announced that the agency has started the nationwide distribution of plastic cards for driver’s licenses.
According to a Philstar report, an additional 600,000 cards were delivered to the LTO.
Around 9.7 million more are expected to arrive which would help address the backlog in driver's licenses.
Mendoza also said that aside from the one million plastic cards, the LTO supplier will deliver 6.5 million more cards.
We need at least 550,000 to 600,000 cards per month. With the arrival of 6.5 million cards plus the remaining 3.2 million cards, these are enough to cover the backlog from last year and cover the 2024 requirements, he said.
To expedite the delivery of licenses, LTO said it is planning to partner with couriers. It is also offering partnerships with local government units.
According to a memorandum issued in March, licenses that expired from April 1 to August 31, 2023, and those expiring from April 1 to 30, 2024 should be renewed from April 15 to 30 to avoid penalties.
For those with licenses that expired September 1 to December 31, 2023, and May 1 to 31, 2024, they should renew within May 1 to 31.
Licenses that expired from January 1 to March 31 this year, as well as those with cards expiring from June 1 to 30, should renew in June.
Failure of the driver to renew his/her driver's license beyond the prescribed schedule shall render the license expired, LTO said.
The agency also reminds motorists that all licenses will be issued on a walk-in basis.
