One of the many HUAWEI facilities in China is the Ox Horn Campus found on the south shore of Songshan Lake, in Dongguan, Guangdong province.

It is a European-themed research and development office built on 1.4 million square meters (140 hectares) of land. To put it into perspective, the HUAWEI Ox Horn Campus is almost 3x the size of Hong Kong Disneyland (49.9 hectares).

The mini city-like facility can house up to 25,000 employees. It is connected by trains and private trams.

The campus is divided into 4 zones, each divided into 12 blocks. In total, the campus features 108 buildings inside.

Each block is themed into a European city like Paris, Verona, Bologna, Granada, etc.

Now that the facility is more complete than ever compared to when we first visited it in 2018, the facility now serves as a great venue to test the cameras of the new HUAWEI Pura 70 Pro.

As a quick recap, the HUAWEI Pura 70 Pro features an XMAGE-enhanced triple camera system headlined by an improved 50MP main shooter with variable f/1.4~f/4.0 aperture, super-focus, and OIS. It is paired with a 12.5MP f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle shooter and a Portrait-ready 48MP f/2.1 3.5x periscope zoom sensor with OIS and macro capabilities.

Basically, HUAWEI built its "own mini Europe" with humid subtropical weather in Dongguan, China. The architecture they made looked stunning with superb attention to detail. In real life, the entire campus simply screams expensive and a sign of might.

In well-lit conditions, the Pura 70 Pro captured the castle-like buildings with accurate details and colors. Exposure is generally balanced and we rarely see shots with overexposure.

Even if it is only using a 12MP sensor for ultra-wide shots, the quality of the shot we got from the Pura 70 is close to what its primary shooter can do. Distortion is minimal as well. We are impressed. This could be great for capturing scenes like what we took above.

The ultra-wide shot will only struggle a little in the dark. Otherwise, this is one of the better ultra-wide sensors for smartphones around.

As expected, the area is a great venue to try the zoom capabilities of the phone.

Like with the P60 Pro last year, the 3.5x zoom of the Pura 70 Pro is my personal favorite camera mode of the phone. It can take amazing-looking 95mm snaps at f/2.1 with a natural bokeh not common on smartphones. Now, it is even better.

For close-up snaps, you don't need to use the Portrait mode anymore to get shots with creamy and dreamy background blurs.

Even up to 10x zoom at 270mm, snaps are lossless with plenty of details in well-lit scenarios. Our 10x zoom shots are generally, social media-ready.

I also tried the 10x zoom mode inside the moving HUAWEI train and it did not disappoint. This is probably the best phone we've tried for detecting edges and separating the subject from the background. Of course, shots will be highly detailed.

Even for food shots, it is amazing. Just take a look at this indoor close-up duck skin shot I took using the Pura 70 Pro inside one of the many restaurants found on the HUAWEI Ox Horn Campus.

To my eyes, HUAWEI remains the king of smartphone night shots. Most of the snaps we took in the dark using the Pura 70 Pro are breathtaking. The phone also handled lights very well most of the time and it doesn't make your shots overly bright with unnatural-looking details.

My minor issue is the lamp shots are slightly overexposed when you use point-and-shoot mode. But, it is still better than most of the 2-3 night mode shots from other brands we tried.

Note: This is just the Pura 70 Pro, the Pura 70 Ultra with a 1-inch sensor is even better.

Quick thoughts

The HUAWEI Ox Horn Campus is undeniably stunning in real life and the imaging capabilities of the Pura 70 Pro gave justice to its beauty.

This is just our first try with the Pura 70 Pro's camera. What I have is not yet the final version of its global software and it will take a little time for its AI to learn my shooting habits and shooting preferences to provide the most optimized possible snaps using this device.

I'm expecting this camera phone to be even more refined and take even better images once we get the retail version of its software.

What do you guys think?
