A more intelligent iOS 18

The major Apple software upgrade now highlights improved customization, customization, security, and support for powerful and intelligent experiences.

We are thrilled to introduce iOS 18. It is a huge release with incredible features, including new levels of customization and capability, a redesigned Photos app, and powerful ways to stay connected with Messages. There are so many benefits for everyone, said Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering. This release also marks the beginning of a tremendously exciting new era of personal intelligence with Apple Intelligence delivering intuitive, powerful, and instantly useful experiences that will transform the iPhone experience, all with privacy at the core. We can't wait for users to experience it.

Some of the notable new features include new ways to customize the Home Screen Lock Screen, and Control Center.

Apple said its users can now arrange apps and widgets in any open space on the home screen. It includes placing them right above the dock for easy access or framing a wallpaper.

There is a new dark or tinted mode as well as an option to make the app icons appear larger.

The Control Center has also been redesigned to provide easier access to many of the things its users do every day, including media playback, Home controls, connectivity, and more in a swipe.

Its users can now switch the controls at the bottom of the lock screen by choosing from options available in the controls or gallery. You can now even remove them entirely.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max users can quickly invoke controls available in the gallery on the Action button.

The Photo app has also been redesigned to help its users easily find and relive special moments. It now has a simplified look: "single view displays a familiar grid and helpful new collections". Its users can now browse by themes, like recent days or trips, without organizing the content into albums. There is a new customizable carousel view that highlights updates each day and features favorite people, pets, places, and more.

iMessage also has new text effects where you can format the text to bold, underline, italics, and strikethrough as well as enjoy the ability to access tapbacks that include any emoji or sticker. Users can now schedule a composed message. It now supports RCS for non-Apple device users and Messages via satellite (for areas without WiFi and cellular connection) as well.

Apple also said that with its Dynamic Island, users can know if they are connected to a satellite and claims that messages via satellite are encrypted end-to-end.

Apple also introduced new enhancements to Mail like new ways for users to manage their inbox and more later this year as well as make the Safari browser easier to use thanks to the Highlights and a redesigned Reader experience. Also, Safari now has machine learning too.

For improved security, Apple introduced the Passwords App to make it easier for users to access passwords, passkeys, WiFi passwords, and verification codes. It has alerts for users regarding common weaknesses like passwords that are easily guessed or used multiple times and those that appear in known data leaks.

Other new privacy features include locked and hidden apps for privacy or peace of mind. Apps can be locked with Face ID, Touch ID, or device passcode, and information won't surface in search and notifications.

iOS 18 also lets users only choose specific contacts with an app.

Apple developers can now seamlessly connect third-party accessories with the iPhone without letting an app see all the other devices on a user's network for privacy.

One of the major updates of iOS 18 is the deep integration of "Apple Intelligence" or AI. It has new ways for users to enhance writing and communication more effectively.

Apple Intelligence allows its users to
rewrite, proofread, and summarize text nearly everywhere they write, including Mail, Notes, Pages, and third-party apps.

It also has an Image Playground to let users create playful images (Animation, Illustration, or Sketch styles) in seconds.

Apple Intelligence even has Memories in Photos that lets users create stories by just typing a description and a new Clean Up tool to identify and remove destructive objects in the background of a photo—"without accidentally altering the subject".

Apple also claims that with Apple Intelligence, Siri has evolved into a more natural, contextually relevant, and personal assistant. ChatGPT is now integrated with Siri as well.

For AI privacy, Apple also introduced Private Cloud Compute promising data is not stored or made accessible to Apple and is only used to fulfill the request of its users.

Other notable new features of iOS 18 include Eye Tracking for navigation, Music Haptis for the deaf using iPhone's Taptic Engine, Vocal Shortcuts to perform tasks by making a custom sound, guest access in the Home app, Emergency SOS Live Video, Calendar app with deep Reminders integration, Medical ID for emergencies in the Health app, solve math formulas in the Notes app, new convenient features for AirPods, enhanced SharePlay with Apple Music, Game Mode to enhance gaming experiences, improved Apple Pay, hiking data in Apple Maps, and more.
