"Active listening" for targeted ads
Do you ever feel like your social media accounts like on Facebook or TikTok are eavesdropping on your conversations? Has it ever happened to you that a topic you mentioned in a conversation Asuddenly shows up on your social media feed?"
This may just be because of the "Active Listening" capability of the media company Cox Media Group (CMG).
According to a report by 404 Media, CMG has said it can target advertisements based on what people say near their device's microphones through Active Listening.
In a pitch deck to investors, CMG said the software uses artificial intelligence (AI) to “capture real-time intent data by listening to our conversations." AI will also be used to analyze the data collected from over 470 sources.
A document obtained by 404 Media showed that Facebook, Google, and Amazon are CMG's clients.
However, Google has removed CGM from its "Partners Program" after 404 Media asked for a comment.
All advertisers must comply with all applicable laws and regulations as well as our Google Ads policies, and when we identify ads or advertisers that violate these policies, we will take appropriate action, a Google representative told New York Post.
Meta said CMG is under review, assuring its users that the company does not use its users' microphones for ads.
Meanwhile, Amazon has denied having ties with CMG.
