Sony ULT FIELD 7 - Superb "portable" party wireless speaker

In case you missed it, Sony "ULT" is the successor of its famous "EXTRA BASS" line.
Meet Sony ULT FIELD 7

The company recently introduced them to the Philippine market, and we have its largest "portable" premium speaker called the ULT FIELD 7 priced at PHP 23,999 SRP.

The Sony ULT FIELD 7 boasts an X-Balanced Speaker Unit with 2x Tweeter Unit (46mm) and 2x Woofer Unit (114-114mm). It also has speaker lights that synchronize with the music, Bluetooth 5.2 with up LDAC lossless audio codec support, USB-A port, 3.5mm jack, and 6.35mm guitar input, button, and knob. This speaker could also be used as Karaoke with DJ Control.

Here's what we think about it.

Big for a portable speaker

Vertical mode

For a "portable speaker", the Sony ULT FIELD 7 is HUGE. In particular, the device measures 512 x 224 x 222 mm and is quite hefty at 6.3 kilograms.

But it has a solid construction boasting a combination of sturdy-looking polycarbonate, mesh fabric material to cover the speakers, and rubber footings for standing in vertical and horizontal modes.

The surprise here is that the company was able to put an IP67 rating for dust protection and water ingress. While it is not advisable, the speaker could survive submersion in water up to 1 meter deep for about 30 minutes. That's a nice feature in case of accidents or if you need to use the speaker outdoors, specifically when it is raining.

It also has fun LED lights on each side and the ULT button.

The device has self-explanatory buttons. You can use it to power on and off the device, pair it via Bluetooth, control volume, and more. Then, it has the ULT button, which we will discuss later.

It also has a neatly hidden access to the AC input, USB-A, 3.5mm audio input, and guitar. There are other buttons for light, battery care, key, and echo controls.

Impressive sound quality

Pairing is easy. Just press and hold the Bluetooth button for about 3 seconds until it blinks. After that, connect your Bluetooth device. You can also download the "Music Center" and "Fiestable" apps to customize the experience and control the device. It would have been nicer if it had a single app instead of two, though.

Impressive sound quality

For sound? I'm impressed. It is generally clean and full sounding with crisp and punchy, well-controlled bass. The sub-bass is also present when needed with a warm, crawling-like effect reminiscent of high-end speaker setups with dedicated subwoofers. The bass is not overpowering most of the time, which could make mids and vocals shine in a lot of tracks.

It is also fairly analytical for a Bluetooth speaker with audible microdetails, especially on live tracks.

In our small 30-square-meter living room, the speaker is very loud even at 30 percent volume.
Similar to other loudspeakers with this size, grain will be a little noticeable, starting at 50 percent loudness. There will be some peaks and harshness in the highs at those volumes as well. Thankfully, it has a 7-band equalizer where you can tune the sound to your liking and help

The soundstage is WIDE on both vertical and horizontal modes. However, I slightly prefer the sound in horizontal mode.

For outdoor use, the weak points we mentioned earlier are less noticeable. The sound is pleasant to the ears even at 70 percent loudness.

Note: Playback using FLAC audio files while on LDAC mode makes a positive difference in sound.

It also has the ULT POWER SOUND modes at the press of a button. ULT1 with a lower bass response, while the ULT2 mode provides louder sound with an even deeper punch. Both modes have some effect on its overall clarity. As a purist, I personally like the ULT mode off, but I can see why a lot of casual users will enjoy these modes.

You can also pair it with another Sony ULT FIELD 7 speaker for stereo sound.

By default, the speaker has a "Priority on Sound Quality" with LDAC lossless audio support, and I never had connectivity issues under this mode, even if I'm a few meters away from the speaker.

Plenty of features, long battery life

The app
The app

On the "Fiestable" option of the app, it also has a DJ Control, Illumination, Karaoke, Motion Control, and Party Light.

It even has a Voice Control mode to control the Lighting, Karaoke, Switching Functions (select Bluetooth, USB, Audio In), and General functions (to start playback, stop music, pause, and control the volume, among others).

Extra-long battery life

According to Sony, the speaker can last up to 30 hours on a single charge. I've been using it for around 30 minutes to 1 hour daily for more than a week, and I was still left with 60 percent battery. Battery drain is very minimal when not in use.

Charging time from 0 to 100 percent is about 5 hours. Sony also included a battery care mode that limits charging to 90 percent to "help preserve" its battery health.

My slight gripe here is that it could've had a USB Type-C port for charging and more.

Note: Unfortunately, I don't own a guitar and haven't been able to try that feature yet.

Our thoughts

The Sony ULT FIELD 7 is a fun speaker with a robust build, long battery life, stable connectivity, and plenty of other features, like the Karaoke and Guitar modes, making it a superb party speaker.

This is also among the best sounding wireless speakers I've tried for the price, with an enjoyable sound signature and overall quality.

It could also be "portable" enough to bring to house or pool parties, provided you have a car.

Overall, this is a value-packed wireless loudspeaker priced at PHP 23,999.
