Reaching PC-like clock speeds?

Recent leaks suggest Qualcomm and ARM are pursuing different strategies for future smartphone processors.

According to tipster Digital Chat Station (DCS), ARM's next CPU core may prioritize higher efficiency with lower clock speeds, while Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 is reportedly targeting record frequencies.

The tipster added that the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 is being tested at speeds around 5GHz, with an overclocked variant potentially reaching 5.3GHz.

However, these are early validation tests, and final clock speeds will depend on performance and efficiency. The chip is still expected to exceed its predecessor, which peaks at 4.47GHz—currently the highest in a mobile device, ahead of Apple's M4 (4.40GHz).

Meanwhile, leaks suggest MediaTek's Dimensity 9500 may run its prime core at 3.23GHz, lower than its predecessors.

Beyond raw clock speeds, the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 is rumored to feature second-gen Oryon cores (25 percent faster) and an Adreno 840 GPU with 30 percent better performance. Early benchmarks show significant gains, though these remain unverified.

Qualcomm has moved its Snapdragon Summit to September 23-25, hinting at an earlier launch than last year's late October reveal.

All details are based on leaks and subject to change, so you may take them with a grain of salt at the moment.
