Sony challenges Samsung in the 200MP sensor race

The 1/1.12-inch sensor is designed to provide what the company describes as high-definition image quality, including when using a 4x in-sensor zoom function.

Its design employs a Quad-Quad Bayer Coding (QQBC) array, which groups 16 same-colored pixels together. This allows the sensor to process image data at a default output of 12.5 megapixels for faster performance.

The in-sensor zoom function works by reorganizing the grouped pixels into a standard array. This process is aided by an integrated AI-processing circuit, a feature Sony identifies as new for the industry.

Sony claims this results in improved detail for textures and text, alongside the ability to record 4K video at 30 frames per second with the zoom engaged.

Technologies, including DCG-HDR and a 12-bit ADC, are intended to deliver a wider dynamic range and better tonal gradation throughout the zoom range. A Hybrid Frame HDR (HF-HDR) mode is stated to achieve a dynamic range exceeding 100dB, which aims to minimize overexposed highlights and underexposed shadows in a final image.

Furthermore, the sensor supports video recording at 8K/30fps and 4K/120fps. For still photography, it can capture bursts at 60fps at 12.5MP, 30fps at 50MP, and 10fps at the full 200MP resolution.

Industry reports suggest the sensor will be featured in upcoming smartphones from manufacturers like OPPO and vivo. Sony confirms the Lytia-901 is now being shipped to device makers.
