Globe restores Metro Manila and Luzon Services after multiple fiber cuts
Globe Telecom has fully restored mobile and broadband services in Metro Manila and parts of Luzon following a network disruption caused by multiple fiber cuts on the afternoon of May 12.
Customers in several cities across Metro Manila and nearby provinces, including Rizal, experienced intermittent connectivity affecting calls, text messaging, and internet access.
Services were restored by 10:30 PM after the company's technical and network teams completed repair efforts.
It is very unfortunate that this disruption happened, which could have been prevented had there been prior coordination with some agencies," said Joel Agustin, Senior Vice President for Service Planning and Engineering at Globe. "Our teams worked continuously to resolve the issue and minimize disruption for our customers. We highly value the availability of our services and the trust our customers place in us, and incidents like this underscore the importance of strict adherence to established coordination and communication protocols by contractors before any excavation activities.
Incident details and ongoing investigation
Initial findings indicate that underground fiber optic cables in Paco, Manila, were damaged during drainage excavation works carried out by a subcontractor of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). The incident resulted in multiple fiber optic cable cuts at the same location, severing several core lines critical to service delivery.
Globe said it is conducting a broader investigation into fiber cuts reported across multiple areas, including whether the incidents were coincidental or occurred in succession. The company said it is coordinating with the contractors involved and relevant authorities to determine the circumstances surrounding the disruption.
We are taking this matter seriously and are coordinating closely with our partners and government agencies to establish accountability and prevent similar incidents moving forward," Agustin said.
Globe said it plans to strengthen coordination with the DPWH, local government units, and contractors to improve infrastructure protection, increase visibility of underground assets, and reinforce incident response protocols.
