New-gen Fitbit health tracker?

Google has launched the Fitbit Air, a compact, screenless wearable designed for users seeking health monitoring without the bulk of a traditional smartwatch.

The device relies on a companion smartphone for displaying data and notifications. The Fitbit Air is the smallest tracker in Google's lineup, measuring 34.9mm in length, 17mm in width, and 8.3mm in thickness.

Meanwhile, the tracker itself weighs 5.2 grams, rising to 12 grams when worn with a band. Its housing is constructed from recycled polycarbonate and PBT plastics, with standard bands made from textile material and a stainless steel buckle. The device carries a water resistance rating of 50 meters.

Despite its compact form factor, the Fitbit Air is equipped with a range of sensors, including an optical heart rate monitor, a 3-axis accelerometer and gyroscope, red and infrared sensors for blood oxygen monitoring, a skin temperature sensor, and a vibration motor.

Health tracking features cover continuous heart rate, resting heart rate, heart rate variability, SpO2, sleep duration and stages, and heart rhythm monitoring with atrial fibrillation alerts.

Google rates the battery life at up to seven days on a full charge, which takes approximately 90 minutes to complete. A five-minute quick charge is said to provide roughly one day of use. The device runs on a lithium-polymer battery and uses Bluetooth 5.0 for connectivity.

The Fitbit Air operates through the Google Health app and supports both Android and iOS devices. Users can initiate workouts manually or allow the device to detect activity automatically, with the system adapting to individual patterns over time.

Integration with Google Health Coach enables personalized guidance, and the app supports image-based workout logging, such as photos of gym equipment or written circuit routines.

Google also markets the Fitbit Air as a complement to its Pixel Watch, suggesting a use case where the smartwatch is worn during the day, and the Fitbit Air takes over overnight, maintaining uninterrupted health data collection.
