The REDMI Note 17 Pro Max 5G has finally arrived in the Philippines, already turning heads with its massive battery capacity and promised durability.

But with this being the most expensive REDMI ever released locally, the big question is: will those headline‑grabbing features be enough to sway potential buyers?

On paper, the new REDMI Note 17 Pro Max 5G is the result of a shift in focus that was brought about by the current AI-caused memory shortage and changing needs of the customer.

The previous generation REDMI Note 15 Pro+ 5G came with a 3,200-nit 6.83-inch 120Hz 1.5K AMOLED screen, a Snapdragon 7s Gen 4, LPDDR4X RAM, UFS 2.2, a 6,500mAh battery, and a 200MP main camera. The REDMI Note 17 Pro Max 5G comes with a 3,500-nit 6.83-inch 120Hz 1.5K AMOLED screen, a new Snapdragon 6 Gen 5, LPDDR5X RAM, UFS 4.1, a 10,000mAh battery, and a 50MP main camera.

At first glance, the spec differences aren't immediately apparent and need a deeper dive, which we will be tackling in our review.

In the Philippines, the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max starts at PHP 30,999 for the 8GB/256GB Shopee exclusive variant.

Our unit is the Shopee-exclusive 8GB/256GB variant.

After two weeks of real‑world use, we dig deep into how it performs in everyday life, gaming, and productivity to see if it truly justifies the price tag.

Inside the box are the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max 5G, pre-installed screen protector, the documentation, USB-A to USB-C cable, SIM ejector tool, 100W wall adapter, and grey bumper case.

Unlike its POCO relatives (ahem, POCO F9 Pro), I’m glad REDMI still included the 100W power brick—no need to buy one separately, and you get to experience its fastest charging right out of the box.

It does not include wired earphones.

Build Quality/Design

The REDMI Note 17 Pro Max comes in Cloud Blush, Green, Purple, or Black colorways. Interestingly, the Cloud Blush colorway is 8.57mm thick, while the Green, Purple, and Black are 8.65mm thick. The phone weighs 229.5 grams and is IP66, IP68, IP69, and IP69K dust and water resistance rated.

Most impressive durability claims from a REDMI smartphone yet

The black is stunning in person, with the black frame and the rear frosted panel look, while having a matte-feeling finish when held.

The front is made of glass and is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus 2. This means it should survive a drop from up to 2.5 meters and up to 3 meters on granite. The rear panel is fiberglass with high impact resistance and a matte texture finish. The frame is a composite of aluminum and other materials.

The SIM tray accommodates up to 2 NanoSIM cards and comes with a red rubber gasket that confirms its IP69K dust and water resistance rating.
REDMI Note 17 Pro Max 5G's left and right sides

On the left side is a smooth surface, while on the right side are the volume rocker and power key.

My take? I won't be dropping this anytime soon—I'd rather avoid dents—but it's reassuring to know the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max 5G carries IP66, IP68, IP69, and even IP69K dust and water resistance. Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protects the front, rated for drops up to 2.5 meters or 3 meters on granite, while the fiberglass rear panel offers high‑impact resistance with a matte texture finish.

And after seeing how the phone was deliberately abused during the live demo at launch, the durability claims look even more convincing.

Rear Cameras

The new REDMI Note 17 Pro Max 5G comes with a new 50MP f/1.5 main camera and an 8MP f/2.2 ultra-wide camera with an LED flash.

The stock camera app includes modes such as Photo, Video, Pro, Portrait, Documents, Ultra HD, Slow Motion, Time-lapse, Dual-Video, Panorama, and Underwater.

The Pro modes allow controls for EV (+/- 4.0), Shutter Speed (1/8000-30 secs), ISO (50-6400), White Balance, AF, and Filters.

Portrait mode can have 1x and 2x modes. It also allows for Beautification from 0 to 100.

The rear camera can capture up to 4K at 30fps, while the selfie camera can capture up 1080 at 30fps.

The REDMI Note 17 Pro Max 5G's main camera takes sharp and vibrant images that perform well in most situations. However, the 2x is prone to camera shake when shooting indoors and in low light. The ultra-wide camera isn't as sharp as the main camera, but it does the job.

The portrait mode's edge detection is spot on as well.

In close-up, the details really pop on the main camera as well.

What impressed us the most is how minimal the noise and grain are in low light.

The Selfie images are similar, producing sharp and vibrant selfies in daylight and indoors. In low light, the noise reduction softened the image and affected the color accuracy.

Performance

GeekBench and GeekBench AI benchmark results
REDMI Note 17 Pro Max 5G's GeekBench and GeekBench AI benchmark results

To recap, the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max 5G comes with the 4nm Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 octa-core processor, Adreno GPU, 8GB/12GB LPDDR5X RAM, and 256GB/512GB UFS 4.1.

REDMI Note 17 Pro Max 5G's 3DMark and CPDT benchmark results

The unit we tested is the 8GB/256GB variant.

Benchmark scores

  • GeekBench - 933 Single-core score, 2,849 Multi-core score
  • GeekBench AI - 1,031 Single Precision, 1,823 Half Precision, Quantized 2,261
  • 3DMark - 4,457 Overall score, 26.69 average FPS
  • CPDT - 536.84 MB/s sequential read speed, 587.76 MB/s sequential write speeds
The benchmark scores are interesting. The Single score on GeekBench is slightly lower than we expected, and in CPDT, the UFS 4.1 should perform faster than 500+MB/s for sequential read and write speeds.

It can handle CapCut Pro video editing and Snapseed photo editing, but this device wouldn't be our first choice.

Generally, the handset is fast enough for the majority of tasks and casual games. It is great for web surfing, media consumption, quick emails or word processing, multitasking, and the like.

Heavier games on the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max 5G are a mixed experience. At the lowest graphics settings, Genshin Impact is mostly playable, with slowdowns only occurring when the screen is filled with animations and characters.

The phone warmed up after extended game time, but it never became alarmingly hot.

The battery

The phone features a massive 10,000mAh battery with 100W fast charging via USB-C.

In the PCMark battery benchmark, the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max ran for 30 hours and 35 minutes, and the phone still had 20 percent battery left. And in our YouTube loop test, it ran YouTube continuously for 21 hours and 9 minutes and had 9 percent battery left.

In our daily use, we would consistently not charge the phone for 3 days. This was with the phone being constantly connected to 5G and WiFi, with constant social media, e-mail, web-surfing, and media consumption.

It takes 50 minutes to fully charge the battery from 0 percent to 100 percent with the included 100W charger.

A phone and power bank in one!

Our favorite feature is that it supports 27W reverse wired charging. This effectively makes the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max 5G into a power bank.

Fast 1.5K display

REDMI Note 17 Pro Max 5G's front screen
REDMI Note 17 Pro Max 5G's front screen

In front is the 6.83-inch AMOLED screen with a 2772 x 1280 resolution, a 3,500 nits peak brightness, a 120Hz refresh rate, and an 8,000,000:1 contrast ratio. It supports 3,840hz PWM Dimming, a 240 Hz touch sampling rate, and 12-bit color depth. It covers the DCI-P3 wide color gamut and is Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protected.

The panel is TÜV Rheinland Low Blue Light, Circadian Friendly, and Flicker-Free Certified.

It is bright and legible in direct sunlight. The images produced are vibrant with deep contrast. The details and text are crisp and sharp on the 1.5K panel.

It supports 10-point multi-touch and features nearly symmetrical super-slim bezels around the phone.

Overall, we love the panel, and we thoroughly enjoyed a ton of media consumption and mobile games on it.

The phone comes with dual stereo speakers that support Dolby Atmos Hi-Res. It can be boosted to 400 percent, but we recommend keeping it at 80 percent of the fuller sounding and higher clarity sound. Above 90 percent, distortion keeps creeping in.

The rest of the features

REDMI Note 17 Pro Max 5G's HyperOS 3.0 UI

Other features of the phone are the in-display fingerprint scanner, AI Face Unlock, WiFi 6, Bluetooth 6.0, NFC, and Dual NanoSIM.

The REDMI Note 17 Pro Max 5G is running on Android 16-based HyperOS 3.0. It adds a system-wide HyperAI Suite. This means Xiaomi has integrated into the OS the AI Writing Assistant, AI Speech Recognition, and a real-time AI interpreter into the OS. HyperOS 3.0 also natively incorporates Google Gemini and Search out of the box.

One of the most impactful changes is that HyperOS now comes with an updated system optimization engine that is certified to maintain like-new software smoothness for up to 6 years of use. Unfortunately, this will take 6 years to test, so we will see how it fares then.

In general, the phone has been running smoothly for the majority of the time we used it. This includes unlocking the phone, opening the app drawer, opening apps, switching between apps, and navigating the UI. The basics are done well.

Pros - Premium design, Tough build materials, stunning and fast panel, IP69K, and 3-day 10,000mAh battery life, decent cameras, 27W reverse wired charging, 100W fast charging
Cons - 2x crop images are always shaky, slightly underperforming in benchmarks, bloatware galore

Verdict

The AI crunch keeps brands on their toes, producing creative ways to magnify smartphone value and offset higher prices. Case in point: the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max 5G, which starts at PHP 30,999, a substantial jump from the previous generation.

What truly impressed us about the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max 5G is its super‑bright and vibrant 1.5K AMOLED screen, massive 10,000mAh battery, 27W reverse wired charging, 100W fast charging speed, and rear camera images with minimal noise.

Our concerns with the phone include that, even with newer hardware, its internal storage speeds underperform compared to other devices using UFS 4.1.

The new HyperOS 3.0 looks better and feels smoother, but it still needs more organized features and settings. It also comes loaded with preinstalled bloatware.

In today's economy, finding a true value‑for‑money smartphone is increasingly difficult—and while the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max tries, the higher price makes the challenge clear.

A solid alternative, if you don’t need the 10,000 mAh battery, is the Xiaomi 17T, which costs slightly more but offers a better processor and camera system.
