NBA to test smart basketballs and referee wearables in preseason games

The NBA will experiment with two new technologies in select preseason games, the league announced Monday.

Game-changing tech on sports?

As posted via NBA News, Wilson has developed a smart basketball with a built-in Bluetooth sensor that collects data in real time.

That information could eventually help inform officiating decisions, though the league said it will be used for research purposes only and will not affect any calls in those games.

Officials in select games will also wear wrist devices that allow them to communicate with the league’s replay center. Designated situations include replay reviews, scoring changes, and clock malfunctions.

After what the NBA called a successful pilot program during the summer league, the wearables will get another test this preseason. They will not be used in the regular season.
