After almost two weeks of using the Huawei Y6 2018 as one of our smartphones, here’s our full review!

Disclaimer: This unit has been seeded to us by Huawei but rest assured of our honest review, as always.

Display Quality

Huawei Y6 2018 features a 5.7-inch HD+ 18:9 screen. It has smaller bezels apart from those traditional budget phones. With its wider screen, it is nice to binge-watch our favorite Netflix show and play games in it. It also offers a mini screen view if you opt to have a smaller screen.

The Y6 2018 has a resolution of 720 x 1440 pixels per inch. It has a nice sharp display for its price.. Its color accuracy is okay and natural looking considering that it is an entry-level phone.

You can still get a good viewing of photos and reading even under direct sunlight as long as you turn its brightness on the highest.

Huawei Y6 2018’s HD+ screen has 10 points of touch.

Audio Quality

The Chinese giant smartphone company is promoting the Huawei Y6 2018 as a multi-media centric smartphone. The company equipped the Y6 2018 with a single loudspeaker and two microphones.

The single loudspeaker makes a nice casual listening. Even if you crank it up to the loudest it can go, it still produces crisp details, with minimal sound distortions.

Its two microphones are working okay and acceptable for phone calls and personal recordings. However, for video recordings, it creates a hissing sound.

Battery Life

Over 10 hours!
Over 10 hours!

Huawei Y6 2018 is packed with a non-removable 3,000mAh battery. The performance of its battery confirms to our battery benchmark result that recorded a total of 10 hours and 14 minutes.

Meanwhile, as we tested Huawei Y6 2018 under heavy usage, it clocked at almost 10 hours--just the same with our battery benchmark result. The heavy usage we’re talking about include: texting, calling, using 4G mobile data, WiFi, and playing games like Asphalt Nitro and PUBG.

We can’t miss to tell that Huawei Y6 2018’s 1A USB Charger can fill up the smartphone’s juice from 0 to 100 percent in almost 2 hours and a half only!

The Y6 2018 features 13MP f/2.2 rear camera with LED flash and a 5MP front camera with soft flash.

Since this is an entry-level smartphone, it only has the basic photo and video option, HDR, panorama, all-focus (giving bokeh-like effect), filters, and watermark.

In terms of camera quality, Huawei Y6 2018’s primary camera shoots nice and decent photos in well-lit places and even low-lighted areas with the help of the LED flash. It also captures nice close-up photos with crisp details coming from an entry-level smartphone.

Performance

Benchmark scores

Huawei Y6 2018 is and entry-level smartphone equipped with the latest Android 8.0 Oreo operating system with Qualcomm MSM8917 Snapdragon 425 quad-core processor.

One of the best entry-level smartphone yet!

The opening and closing off apps are snappy but sometimes it’s a bit lagging. It can be deemed to the phone’s 2GB RAM. It is equipped with a 16GB ROM and is expandable up to 256GB via dedicated microSD card slot.
PUBG low settings
PUBG low settings

We tested the heavy mobile game PUBG with the Huawei. Upon opening the game, as expected, it has adjusted the setting to the lowest to accommodate the capability of the phone. But that’s fine, since the Huawei Y6 2018 still gave us a nice gaming experience even in low settings.

The Y6 2018’s thermal management is also great. Even though the body is made of plastic, it doesn’t get alarmingly hot while using 4G data.

Huawei has its pre-installed apps like Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Lazada, and some games. It also has a Ride Mode feature that automatically answers your phone with voice or SMS messages.

The Huawei Y6 2018 does not have a Fingerprint Sensor but has the latest security feature, the face unlock. In our experience, the Face Unlock feature of the Y6 2018 is responsive but barely works on a low-lighted area.

The rest of the telephony experience works great. It has a strong GSM signal for SIMs, WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS. It has LED notification, OTG, and Dual SIM slots.

Pros - 18:9 HD+ screen, Android 8.0 (Oreo), good cameras, nice thermal condition, stable LTE connectivity
Cons - Face unlock barely works in low-lighted areas, not on USB Type-C

Verdict

The Huawei Y6 2018 is a total upgrade for the Y-series of the Huawei smartphone.

The design is premium looking, it has a sharp display, battery performance is stellar, with a great overall performance for the price.

For us, the Huawei Y6 2018 is a steal for its price of PHP 5,990!
