Samsung joins the bang-for-the-buck group?

Build/Design - Samsung Galaxy A20 has a black made out of tough plastic and with plastic frame. There is no Gorilla Glass protection mentioned for the screen. The realme 3 is made out of a polycarbonate material with 3D-like curved back. It also has a glossy finish that give an illusion of a glass panel. It also goes with a Gorilla Glass 3 protected front.

The back design

In the build quality, the realme 3 looks more premium due to the design choices they made. The Gorilla Glass 3 protection upfront is also a plus. That is not saying that the Samsung Galaxy A20's design is bad since it can also hold its own.

Realme 3 has a gradient colorway at the back while the Samsung Galaxy A20 has a more traditional solid matte-looking colorway back.

In the looks department, the look of realme 3 rides the modern trend of gradients while the Galaxy A20 goes a more traditional route of solid colors.

Display - The Samsung Galaxy A20 has a 6.4-inch 2.5D Super AMOLED screen. It also has an HD+ resolution of 1560 x 720 at 268 ppi. Although it has an HD+ resolution, it is still a Super AMOLED screen which are known to be brighter and better looking than IPS displays.

On the other hand, realme 3 has a 6.2-inch screen with a 1520 x 720 HD+ resolution. Colors are accurate with great pop. Blacks are not that deep but it is more than usable in media consumption.

Both phones has dewdrop-style notch which is a welcome design choice. They also have slim side bezels. The chin is a bit thick on both phones, but forgivable for the price.

Specs - Samsung Galaxy A20 has a 1.6GHz Exynos 7884 octa-core processor, Mali-G71 MP2 GPU, up to 3GB of RAM with up to 32GB of expandable storage, and 4,000mAh battery with up to 15W fast charging tech.

Realme 3 has a 2.0GHz Helio P60 octa-core processor with dual core AI, Mali-G72 MP3, up to 4GB of RAM with up to 64GB of expandable storage and a 4,230mAh battery with 10W fast charging.

On paper, realme 3 is ahead by a bit. It has a faster clocked processor, bigger ram and bigger storage as well as a bigger camera. That does not make the Galaxy A20 not worthy though. It still has capable specs and a faster fast charging tech.

Both also comes with speedy 4G LTE connectivity.

Cameras - The camera department is pretty close. Both has a dual camera setup with a 13MP main sensor. The Galaxy A20 has a bigger 5MP depth sensor though.

But, realme 3 highlights a brighter f/1.8 lens and a the speedier PDAF focus. It also has the Nightscape feature that can hold its own even against flagships in low light shots. 

Realme 3 has a 13MP f/1.8 main sensor paired with a 2MP f/2.4 secondary depth sensor with PDAF and LED flash. It also has a 13MP f/2.0 with AI face beauty.

For selfies, realme 3 takes the lead with a bigger AI assisted 13MP camera.

Other features - Both devices are packed with more than what you would expect at this price point. Both has 4G LTE. fingerprint sensor, and face unlock. The Galaxy A20 has a USB-C port compared to the micro USB port of realme 3.

Our thoughts

Samsung is definitely making waves with their Galaxy A-series. With the Galaxy A20, they are trying their hands in changing the perception of the consumers that they cannot deliver a capable budget phone.

Realme 3 is a great choice for the comparison here since it set the bar for budget smartphones. Realme 3 still has the better looking specs for the price though.

But honestly, Samsung did not disappoint here. It comes with a Super AMOLED screen, capable specs, cameras, and USB-C, the Galaxy A20 has a good package.
