A month back, Xiaomi introduced the Redmi Note 8 series in the Philippines, the Redmi Note 8 and Redmi Note 8 Pro. For me, these two phones changed the mid-range smartphone market. Here are the reasons why.

How did the Redmi Note 8 series change the PH mid-range smartphone market?

Gorilla Glass protected phones

1. Both are equipped with premium materials for the price - Redmi Note 8 and Note 8 Pro belongs to the few with Gorilla Glass 5 protected front and back. The back of Note 8 uses 2.5D curved glass while Redmi Note 8 Pro has the more premium-looking 3D curved glass.

The Redmi Note 8 and Note 8 Pro have big screens with tiny dot drop notches at 6.3-inch and 6.53-inch, respectively.

The two have P2i water splash resistance as well. Not all mid-rangers has that feature.

2. Arguably the best specs on paper for the price - Redmi Note 8 is one of the very few that runs with the power-efficient 11nm Snapdragon 665 chip in its class.

Note 8 Pro

Redmi Note 8 Pro is the only one with the gaming-focused MediaTek Helio G90T in the country yet. It even has liquid cooling to reduce the temperature of the phone by 4 to 6 degrees.

Redmi Note 8 has up to 4GB RAM and 128GB storage while Note 8 Pro has up to 8GB RAM and 128GB storage.

Note 8 has a large 4,000mAh battery while Note 8 Pro even has a bigger 4,500mAh juice. Both can be charged via USB-C with fast-charging support. Note 8 Pro even supports QC 3.0, QC 4+, USB PD, MTK PE fast charging protocols.

For me, despite its low PHP 7,990 starting price, Redmi Note 8 can compete with even against the OPPO A9 2020 priced at PHP 15,990.

On the other hand, for its starting price of PHP 11,490, the Redmi Note 8 Pro beats everything in its path.

To beat it (as of writing), you need to spend at least PHP 18,990 and get the likes of Mi 9T Pro or Nova 5T.

3. Powerful cameras - Redmi Note 8 has some of the best cameras for its price. It is also one of the very few with a quad-camera system under PHP 10K. In particular, we discovered that its 48MP + 8MP + 2MP + 2MP cameras can compete even against the PHP 18,990 Samsung Galaxy A50s.

The proof? Watch our video here.

On the other hand, the Redmi Note 8 Pro is the most affordable with a 64MP shooter yet. While I haven't personally tested it yet, it is a very promising camera phone.
