AV1 video codec will possible with Dimensity 1000

Once implemented, the MediaTek Dimensity 1000 will be the first smartphone SoC to integrate AV1 hardware video decoder. It will allow for AV1 video streams up to 4K at 60 fps. In turn, it will provide improved video quality for less data usage.

In addition, the Dimensity 1000 will become more battery efficient while video streaming even at the highest quality settings. This means smartphones with this SoC along with its 5G capabilities will push it as a frontrunner in the industry in terms of design and capabilities.

The AV1 video codec is pushing change in the video streaming industry. It was first released in 2018 by the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia), AV1 is royalty-free and is designed to replace the VP9 codec and become the Internet Video Codec (NETVC) standard.

AV1 is an ultra-high-performance video codec technology that delivers 30 percent more compression efficiency over existing VP9.
