In December of 2019, OPPO showcased a prototype smartphone with an under-display camera that you can read more about at this link. This new technology could allow future smartphones to remove the notch or punch-hole entirely.

There has been no official word from other brands regarding an under-display camera (or under screen camera) so take this information with a grain of salt.

Another way of explaining this is that the video on the screen of the smartphone could have been digitally placed on top of the phone.
