An upgrade to 2018's Snapdragon 675

In 2018, Qualcomm announced the 11nm 2.0 GHz Snapdragon 675 which became a staple SoC for the mid-range segment.

Fast forward to 2020,  Qualcomm announces the new 11nm 2.2GHz Snapdragon 678 SoC with Kyro 460 CPU, Adreno 612 GPU, Qualcomm Snapdragon X12 LTE Modem, WiFi, Bluetooth 5.0, and NFC.

It features the 14-bit Qualcomm Spectra 250L ISP which supports up to a single 192MP camera and a single/dual camera set-up with MFNR up to either 25MP single camera or 16MP dual cameras. It also supports AF, 4K at 30fps video recording, 5X optical zoom, HEVC recording, EIS acceleration and slow motion recording.

It supports USB 3.1, USB-C, Quick Charge 4+, up to 10-Bit FHD+ displays and Qualcomm Aqstic Audio. Overall, the SD 678 is a minor upgrade over the popular 675 and it is still LTE only which may be a concern for people who want 5G for future proofing.

Devices equipped with the new chipset should arrive in 2021.
