Ookla: PLDT, Smart offer faster networks in H2 2020

Internet testing global leader Ookla claims that PLDT and Smart are the fastest network in the Philippines in the second half of 2020.

PLDT and Smart have the fastest fixed, mobile networks

PLDT and its wireless unit Smart Communications touted to be the fastest fixed and mobile networks in the country in the second half of 2020, according to Ookla, the global leader in internet testing and analysis.

Data from Ookla showed that PLDT hit a speed score of 27.28 for the July to December period, with top download speeds of 79.48 megabits per second (Mbps) and top upload speeds of 92.18 Mbps.

Smart, meanwhile, had a speed score of 24.99, boasting average download speeds of 20.08 Mbps and average upload speeds of 7.42 Mbps.

Mario G. Tamayo, Head of Technology at PLDT-Smart, said the Ookla report only reflected the group's continuous network investment despite the coronavirus pandemic.

PLDT earlier said it already spent around PHP 260 billion in the last five years to boost its network infrastructure.

For 2021, Alfredo Panlilio, PLDT chief revenue officer and Smart Communications President and CEO, said the group may invest between PHP 88 billion to PHP 92 billion.
