IDC: Smartphone market up in Q1 2021, percentage-wise Xiaomi and OPPO grew the most!

According to the latest data from international research firm IDC, the global smartphone market continues to recover. Shipments are up by 25.5 percent in Q1 2021.

Global smartphone market recovers

In total, smartphone vendors shipped nearly 346 million smartphones during the quarter. The regions with the greatest gain are from China and Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan and China).

IDC added that the market recovery is faster than expected. The help of 5G also helped in boosting the market.

South Korea's Samsung remained on top with 21.8 percent of the market share or 75.3 million units shipped. Apple is at number 2 with 16 percent of the pie at 55.2 million units shipped. Apple grew by 50.4 percent YoY (year-over-year) as well.

By percentage, Xiaomi and OPPO grew the most. YoY, the companies recorded 64.8 and 64.5 percent growth, respectively. Xiaomi is at number 3 with 14.1 percent of the market share at 48.6 million units shipped. OPPO is at number 4 with 10.8 percent and 37.5 million units shipped.

vivo, completes the top 5 with 10.1 percent of the pie and 34.9 million units shipped. The company grew by 40.7 percent YoY.

Tech giant Huawei, the market leader in 2Q20 is not included in the top 5 in years. This is due to heavy declines under the increased weight of US sanctions. Huawei's decline contributed to the growth of Xiaomi, OPPO, and vivo.

LG also decided to exit the market recently which created an immediate opportunity for other brands.
