HUAWEI releases Mate 50 Series with a variable aperture camera and satellite messaging tech!

Tech giant HUAWEI in China today launched the Mate 50 series. This is the first time that the company announced a Mate-branded high-end smartphone nearly 2 years after the launch of the Mate 40 in late 2020.

The new Mate 50 phones are now official!

First is the HUAWEI Mate 50, it is a premium device with IP68 water and dust resistance and a large 6.7-inch OLED screen with 90Hz refresh rate, 300Hz touch sampling rate, FHD+ 2700 x 1224 resolution, P3 wide color gamut, In-Display fingerprint reader, and a top-center punch-hole for the 13MP f/2.4 ultra-wide-angle front camera.

Under the hood, the handset is powered by the 4G version of the 4nm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip with up to 3.2GHz clock speed and a new-generation Adreno GPU. It is paired with 8GB RAM, 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB expandable internal storage via NM card slot up to 256GB, and a 4,460mAh battery with USB-C 66W SuperCharge tech.

For cameras, the handset is boasting a new 50MP super optical camera with f/1.4 to f/4.0 variable aperture + OIS. It also has a 13MP f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle camera, 12MP f/3.4 5x periscope camera with OIS, and an LED flash.

The device also has stereo speakers, WiFi 6, HE160, 4096 QAM, 8 Spatial-stream Sounding MU-MIMO (2.4GHz/5GHz), 4G LTE, Bluetooth 5.2 (SBC, AAC, LDAC), NFC, GNSS, and HarmonyOS 3.0 operating system.

It measures 161.5 x 76.1 x 7.98 mm and weighs 184 grams for the Streamer Purple, Frost Silver, and Obsidian Black colors or 188 grams for the Kunlun Dawn or Kunlun Xiaguang editions.

Meanwhile, the HUAWEI Mate 50 Pro is the more powerful offering featuring an IP68-rated body and a larger 6.74-inch curved OLED panel with 120Hz refresh rate, 300Hz touch sampling rate, 1440Hz high-frequency PWM dimming, FHD+ 2616 x 1212 resolution, P3 wide color gamut, In-Display fingerprint reader, and a 13MP f/2.4 selfie camera with 3D depth camera for 3D face recognition and more.

Under the hood, the same. It is running the 4G version of the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. The storage options are similar coming from the vanilla Mate 50. The battery capacity is slightly bigger at 4,700mAh with USB-C 66W SuperCharge, 50W Wireless SuperCharge, and HUAWEI-original reverse wireless charging.

For cameras, 50MP f/1.4 to f/4.0 aperture with OIS, 13MP f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle Cine camera, a 64MP f/3.5 with 3.5x optical zoom, up to 100x digital zoom, OIS, and an LED flash.

It also has stereo speakers and runs with HarmonyOS 3.0.

The device measures 162.1 x 75.5 x 8.5 mm. It weighs 209 grams for the glass version and 205 grams for the Vegan Leather edition.

Both phones come with satellite messaging technology that allows users to communicate even without network coverage.

Sadly, the two have no 5G connection due to US restrictions.

The new phones are now available for pre-order in China.

There is no info regarding its international availability details yet.
