OPPO Reno8 5G Low Light Camera Samples—Is it really that good?

We recently took the new OPPO Reno8 5G for a spin to check its low-light shooting capabilities.

Great for low-light shots?

OPPO said that this handset can take impressive images on both its back and front cameras as they are said to be "flagship-grade."

To recall, the handset is boasting the 50MP f/1.8 Sony IMX766 sensor, the same sensor found on most high-end smartphones last year and premium mid-rangers this year. For selfies, you will find another premium camera, the 32MP f/2.4 Sony IMX709 RGBW sensor.

Moreover, it has the MTK Dimensity 1300 chip with a capable ISP boasting up to 200MP cameras, 4K video shooting, HDR-ISP, Video HDR, Video NR, Video Bokeh, Video EIS, AI Shutter, and many more. It even has several software tricks like the Ultra Night Video for better low-light videos with less noise, Ultra HDR Video for better dynamic range avoiding under and overexposure, and Night Portrait for noise-reduced shots in the dark with background blur effect, among others.

Our thoughts

If we are only talking about its main back camera and the selfie camera, the OPPO Reno8 5G takes pretty impressive images.

With or without the Night mode, the main camera performed well in the dark. Night shots are highly detailed and not overly processed. They have little grain and a pretty good dynamic range as well. One thing OPPO could improve is the glare on some light sources. But, in general, this is great for the price.

Meanwhile, it has one of the best selfie cameras we have tried in challenging conditions like low light. Yes, it has beautification by default, but you can always turn that off. What matters the most is it takes highly detailed images for a selfie cam. Of course, it is not perfect, but it is considered great at this price point.
