Smart supports SIM card registration bill

The company said it welcomes the decision of a House panel approving the consolidated measure requiring the registration of prepaid and postpaid SIM cards, especially to curb mobile phone-aided criminal activities such as text scams.

According to Alfredo S. Panlilio, PLDT Inc and Smart Communications President and CEO, the group is ready to cooperate with the government.

Consumer online protection has always been one of Smart's advocacies. Safeguarding our customers against fraud is part of our commitment to ensure leveled-up customer experience. We also welcome any opportunity to support the legislative process and contribute to the crafting of the bill's implementing rules and regulations, Panlilio said.

Smart said it has intensified its cybersecurity systems amid the surging cases of text scams.

Earlier, the company said it blocked more than 11 billion attempts to open links associated with spam messages from January to August this year.

Around 167,000 listed accounts have also been blacklisted for being sources of fraudulent messages.

For 2021, Smart said the PLDT Group invested nearly PHP 3 billion in its cybersecurity infrastructure to protect subscribers against criminals.
