Ireland imposes EUR 265 million fine on Meta

The critical information leaked from Facebook from 2018 to 2019 includes phone numbers, locations, and birthdates of 533 million users. Following media reports regarding the discovery of this dataset, which was made public online, the DPC began its inquiry into the incident on April 14, 2021. Meta was found to have violated the EU's GDPR requirement for "Data Protection by Design and Default" in the investigation's compliance with that requirement.

The DPC's choice was made last Friday and made available to the public today. It shows that Meta violated two provisions of the GDPR rules. In addition to the previously noted punishment, the DPC notes that Meta has also been given an order directing it to bring its data processing "into compliance by completing a range of specified remedial activities within a defined deadline".

All of the other data protection supervisory agencies in the EU cooperated during the thorough investigation process and supported the DPC's judgment.
