We look at the Korean firm's new flagship to see how it performs when equipped with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

Aside from the new 4nm octa-core processor, the Galaxy S23 Ultra comes with a next-generation Adreno GPU, 12GB LPDDR5X RAM, 256GB/512GB/1TB UFS 4.0, and a 5,000mAh battery.

In front is a 6.8-inch Gorilla Glass Victus-protected Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with a 120Hz refresh rate and a 3080 x 1440 resolution.

In the Philippines, the Galaxy S23 Ultra starts at PHP 81,990 for the 12GB/256GB variant.

Let's see how it performs in a series of benchmarking apps.

The most powerful Galaxy phone yet?

AnTuTu and GeekBench performance
AnTuTu and GeekBench performance

1. AnTuTu Benchmark version 9.4.4 - The Galaxy S23 Ultra managed to score over 1,182,358 in AnTuTu. During the test, the phone's temperature peaked at 37.5 degrees and slowly went down to 37 degrees. The phone also used up 4 percent of the battery while running the test.

When looking at the breakdown, the SoC also produced an impressive score of 506,888 in the GPU part of the test. This is nearly a 100K point increase from the Z Fold 4's SD8+G1.

2. GeekBench 6 Benchmark - This benchmark measures the capabilities of individual single-core and multi-core performance in one click.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra scored an impressive 1,872 in single-core tests and 4,844 in multi-core tests. This means that the Galaxy S23 Ultra handles multi-tasking well enough to beat most smartphones today.

3. 3DMark WildLife ExtremeThis is a demanding set of tests that measure GPU and CPU performance where the Galaxy S23 Ultra scored 3,732 and an average of 22.4 fps. These are scores expected from a phone equipped with similar SoCs.

4. CPDT - This test measures the read and writes speeds of the internal storage. The S23 Ultra's internal storage got an average of 1 GB/s in sequential read speeds and an average of 439.38 MB/s in sequential write speeds. The new flagship has top-tier read speeds but the write speed is just under 500MB/s which could be faster.

5. AI Benchmark - AI Benchmark measures the AI processing capabilities of the smartphone. In this case, the Galaxy S23 Ultra scored 2,008 with the comment "your device is a monster!". This is a massive upgrade over the Galaxy Z Fold4's score of 1,340. This means that the S23 Ultra beat the majority of the other smartphones that took this test.

6. PCMark - PCMark Battery benchmark runs the phone thru several unique tasks that measure the battery consumption and endurance of the phone. After the test, the S23 Ultra endured over 15 hours and 19 minutes. This is a 2-hour improvement over the S22 Ultra's PCMark battery result in our full review.

Quick thoughts

The Ultra's front view
The Ultra's front view

After running the phone through several benchmarks, it is clear that the Galaxy S23 Ultra's Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, LPDDR5X RAM, and UFS 4.0 storage perform with impressive results.

The new flagship performed impressively in processor and memory-related tasks while maintaining proper temperature management. Where the Galaxy S23 Ultra struggled is the internal storage's sequential write speeds at just under 500MB/s.

Otherwise, the performance of the Galaxy S23 Ultra is on par with what we expect from smartphones with the latest technology.
