HONOR 90 5G Unboxing, First Impressions, Camera Samples - 200MP camera comes to mid-range?

These are our first impressions of the upcoming HONOR 90 5G with a 200MP main rear camera, Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoC, and a 120z curved OLED screen.

HONOR 90 5G in Diamond Silver

To recap, the HONOR 90 5G's claim to fame is its 200MP f/1.9 main camera with a 1/1.4-inch sensor and its 6.7-inch OLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate and TUV Rheinland certification for eye-protection. It has the highest pulse width modulation which is said to reduce eye strain in low brightness.

Other specs include the 4nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, Adreno GPU, 12GB RAM, 512GB storage, and a 5,000mAh battery with 66W HONOR SuperCharge.

In the Philippines, the device is expected to be priced around to or similar to the previous HONOR 70.

Unboxing/Accessories

HONOR 90 5G's box

The HONOR 905G's packaging is a good example of a minimalist take. It only has the HONOR 90 branding in front. At the back of the box are the key specs, features, and regulatory information.

Inside the box are the phone, SIM ejector tool, USB-A to USB-C cable, 66W wall charger, bumper case, and documentation.

There are no included earphones inside the box.

Build Quality/Design

HONOR 90 5G Diamond Silver rear design

The build of the phone is what we come to expect from a premium mid-range smartphone in 2023. It is made of a combination of glass and high-quality polycarbonate.

The rear glasstic panel on the Diamond Silver colorway has a dotted pattern that becomes more visible when the light hits the surface at certain angles. The recessed dots add texture and friction to the panel which gives it a tactile feel and a less slippery surface.

It does have two large camera bumps with a glossy silver trim on the upper left corner while at the bottom are branding and regulatory information.

HONOR 90's curved display

Moving to the screen, it has a 6.7-inch curved OLED screen with a 2664 x 1200 resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, a 3,840Hz high-frequency PWM dimming, a 1,600 nits peak brightness, and an In-Display fingerprint scanner.

Around the panel are slim bezels with a near-symmetrical thickness where the chin bezel is slightly thicker than the rest. On the top bezel is the hidden super slim earpiece.

On top, is the smooth surface with a microphone port while on the bottom are the speaker grill, USB-C, microphone port, and a SIM tray.

The SIM tray accommodates up to two nano SIM cards. It has a green rubber gasket that could indicate a form of water and dust resistance.

On the left side is a smooth surface while on the right side are the polycarbonate volume rocker and polycarbonate power button. These buttons have a plastic-y and unsatisfying feel when pressed.

HONOR 90 5G's rear cameras

At the back of the phone are the 200MP f/1.9 main camera with a 1/1.4-inch sensor, a 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide angle camera, and a 2MP f/2.4 depth sensor with an LED flash.

While in front is a 50MP f/2.4 selfie camera. The device records up to 4K videos as well.

Aside from that, the camera app features the following modes: Photo, Video, Night, Portrait, Pro, Extra HD, Pano, Slo-Mo, Time-lapse, Dual-View video, Sticker, and Text Scanner.

The initial images from the HONOR 90 are decent and it is showing some promise. But, it could see more polishing in the post process to make the images stand out further.

HONOR 90 5G web surfing

We are definitely excited to see how the HONOR 90 5G's 200MP cameras perform in a variety of situations.

In addition to that, we are going to see if there is a perceivable increase in eye comfort when using the screen at low brightness.

Aside from that we are happy to see great specs like a Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 Accelerated Edition, 12GB RAM, 512GB storage, and a 5,000mAh battery with 66W fast wired charging in a smartphone with premium design and materials for an expected price of under 30K.

So far, our initial impression of the HONOR 90 5G is truly positive.
