A new mid-range camera contender?

Ahead of its launch, we were able to try them out. In particular, the unit that I was using personally is the OPPO Reno11 Pro.

The main highlight of this device is its camera system.

Coming from its predecessor, the OPPO Reno11 Pro sports identical cameras.

In particular, it is still packed with the 50MP f/1.8 IMX890 main sensor with AF and OIS for stabilization, an 8MP f/2.2 Sony IMX355 ultra-wide-angle camera, and a 32MP f/2.0 IMX709 camera. In front, you get the 32MP f/2.4 Sony IMX709 RGBW camera AF.

What's different is it is now using a faster and better processor, the 4nm MediaTek Dimensity 8200 made for premium smartphones. This chipset also has a 14-bit HDR-ISP allowing its users to enjoy "true-to-life" photos and HDR videos with fast AI-noise reduction.

OPPO also said that the phones have flagship-level photography algorithms that will allow its users to enjoy high-quality Portrait, zoom, and overall photos in different scenarios.

Moreover, it is equipped with the Portrait Expert Engine for better overall Portrait shots with the help of professional portrait photographers from around the world.

Without any further ado, here are the first photos we took using the OPPO Reno11 Pro 5G.

The first thing we tried here is too see how well its main camera performs in daylight. As expected, the results are impressive. From memory, it has a more accurate color reproduction than the previous generation. The dynamic range is also noticeably wider and the textures were more noticeable this time.

In daylight, the ultra-wide is also impressive. Barrel distortion is minimal and the colors are almost identical coming from the main camera. The main camera is just slightly more vibrant.

There are very few mid-range camera phones that can produce ultra-wide and main camera shots that have similar colors in daylight.

The other highlight of the Reno11 Pro is its zoom capabilities. It has an optical 47mm 2x zoom and it has a lossless 5x digital zoom. Thanks to OPPO's imaging algorithms, the quality of the 5x zoom is almost as detailed as its 2x mode. It also can produce close-up shots with background blur.

One of the advantages of having a nice telephoto camera is you can enjoy incredible-looking Portrait snaps. In this photo, the result we achieved is near the flagship level with rich colors, nice subject-to-background separation, and minimal beautification.

Of course, you can always customize the beauty part in the software.

This is arguably the best Portrait mode we've seen on a mid-range device.

To see how detailed its main camera is, we took an indoor photo in pretty dim lighting settings and cropped it. As you can see, it is highly detailed even when cropped. Noise is minimal.

Of course, you can always use its zoom camera. Personally, I was very impressed with the textures it showed in this photo as well as its overall details and colors. This is already comparable to some phones in the 40K range.
Indoor 0.6x ultra-wide
Indoor 0.6x ultra-wide

Indoor, you can see that the quality degrades. The colors are not as vibrant with some magenta hue. There are some parts with slight overexposure as well. This is still a decent ultra-wide shot with barely noticeable noise.

In the dark, it'll shine even brighter. The results are very pleasing to the eyes even if you do not use the Night mode.

While in Mind Museum BGC, we saw this earth replica in the dark. Have a look at how detailed the shot is even in 2x mode. Very impressive right?

The max zoom range it can do is 20x with a 417mm equivalent at f/2.0 With the help of its AI, you can somehow see the details of the moon. While it doesn't have a periscope zoom-like range, this is not bad.

Quick thoughts

The OPPO Reno11 Pro 5G is arguably the most capable among all the photography phones we have tested yet. The results we achieved are near flagship level and that's very impressive for a phone that will be priced in the upper mid-range category. This could be a great all-around camera phone due to its imaging prowess with very few weak points in its class.

We will be trying the rest of its camera features including the selfie cam and 4K video shooting for both the back and front cameras in the coming days.

What do you guys think?
