Bye Nokia smartphone brand?

Originally, the Finland-based firm, first launched 5 Nokia-branded feature (dumb) phones in 2016 and 6 Android smartphones in 2017. As of 2023, the company has a presence in 200 countries and sold around 400 million devices.

In a short video teaser and on its official website, the company kinda "reintroduced" itself and shared what HMD means—Human Mobile Devices.

It is still not clear if the company will fully drop Nokia smartphones, but their teaser implies that it is likely the case.

But, the firm said that,

We've got a new look, but some things will stay the same. We make phones that are tough, fun, secure, fast, and affordable.

This means that they will still likely use Nokia tech and patents for their upcoming HMD-branded smartphones. It'll just have a new branding.

Moreover, its devices will still be built with repairability and sustainability in mind.

Going back to the teaser, HMD shared that they will still make dumb phones. At the moment, they are number 2 in the world in terms of market share in that category.

It showed a silhouette of a refreshed version of the Nokia 3310, one of the best-selling and most iconic phones of all time. This is also the phone with legendary durability which has been the subject of memes poking fun at its "indestructibility".

What's new with this 3310 is it'll finally support 5G connectivity. In 2017, the company launched a version of this device with 3G followed by  4G with VoLTE and WiFi hotspot variant in 2018.

The devices are expected to be released at the MWC 2024 event in Barcelona, Spain.

Stay tuned for more info.
