End of Meizu smartphones

Meizu is one of the earlier makers of bang-for-the-buck smartphones with interesting Android skins. Its first smartphone based on Windows CE 8.0 was released in 2007 while its first Android smartphone was announced in 2011. During its heyday, the company was often perceived as a strong rival to Xiaomi and other Chinese players.

According to Shen Ziyu, Chairman and CEO of Xingji Meizu Group will invest "All in AI" instead after 2 years of preparations.

Reports say that the company's FlymeOS team will be reconstructed to work on new AI terminal devices that use globally available LMM (large language model) such as OpenAI.

The CEO also claims that it has successfully transitioned from being a "mobile phone" company to an "ecological group".

It added that Meizu saw its MYVU brand become a leader in AR glasses. Meizu has developed immersive multi-terminal experiences and shared core competencies with partners via its Unbounded Zhixing open platform.

Shen also said that consumers are now taking a longer time to upgrade with an average of 51 months (over 4 years). He added that phone brands also offer comparable performance in smoothness, photography, and features.

Its exit from the smartphone business means that it includes canceling the development of upcoming smartphone models such as Meizu 21 Pro, Meizu 22, and Meizu 23.

Meizu assured that support for existing Meizu products and services which includes access to offline stores will remain unaffected in China.

Meizu has plans to launch a new mobile operating system tailored for the AI era in 2024. It'll also unveil its first AI hardware product later this year.
