Can the new Infinix NOTE 40 Pro+ 5G compete with the realme 12+ 5G?
Team Infinix or team realme?

The new Infinix NOTE 40 Pro+ 5G (PHP 13,999 SRP) is one of the hottest new affordable mid-range smartphones in town thanks to its great build, strong specs, and plenty of premium-level features not commonly found in its price range.

Meanwhile, the realme 12+ 5G (starts at PHP 17,999) is also packed with a beautiful build, capable performance, interesting cameras, and many nice features.

The question? Could the Infinix NOTE 40 Pro+ 5G compete with a higher-priced phone like the realme 12+ 5G?

Read on.

Performance and other features - The Infinix NOTE 40 Pro+ 5G boasts the 6nm MediaTek Dimensity 7020 octa-core processor with the IMG BXM-8-256 GPU. It is paired with 12GB LPDDR4X and 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage. The RAM (Extended RAM tech) could even be upgraded virtually up to 24GB to ensure that it can run a lot of apps in the background and load apps with ease without slowing down the system.

Meanwhile, the realme 12+ 5G has the 2.4GHz 6nm MediaTek Dimensity 7050 octa-core processor with Mali-G68 MC4 GPU. It is paired with 8GB or 12GB RAM and 128GB or 256GB of internal storage.

The memory option of the Infinix NOTE 40 Pro+ 5G is larger than the base memory option of the realme 12+ 5G. You will need to spend PHP 19,999 to get the realme 12+ 5G with the same capacity.

On speed, the realme 12+ 5G is ahead due to its stronger processor. On most of the casual tasks I do, the speed difference is not noticeable. On demanding games, the realme 12+ 5G will have a slight advantage. That's understandable due to its higher cost.

For battery, the NOTE 40 Pro+ 5G sports a 4,600mAh capacity. This is a dual-cell battery that supports its super-fast charging solution. On the other hand, the realme 12+ 5G has a slightly larger 5,000mAh capacity but with a slower type of fast charging.

In our test, the device can last an entire work day of about 10 hours with about 20 percent left in the tank. Under the same situation, the realme 12+ 5G has a similar performance. This means that Infinix optimized its battery quite well to be able to match the performance of a bigger cell.

One clear advantage of its Infinix despite being the more affordable phone is its  All-Around FastCharge 2.0 tech. It supports super-fast 100W charging that can fill its entire capacity in under 25 minutes without degrading its cell.

In addition, it comes with a 20W Wireless MagCharge support that you can use to charge the phone wirelessly to devices like power banks and MagChargers with the help of magnets.

This also has bypass charging that helps maintain battery health and prevent the phone from heating up while gaming.

You may learn more about this tech by clicking our full experience found in this link.

Meanwhile, the realme 12+ 5G can also quickly charge its 5,000mAh battery with its USB-C 67W SUPERVOOC tech. This is also a fast and safe charging solution that can fill its entire capacity in under 45 minutes.

For software, both run with Android 14 OS out of the box. Infinix uses XOS 14 while realme comes with the realme UI 5.0 skin.

What I like about Infinix is it has an emphasis on AI as it has deep integration with OpenAI's GPT-3.5 model. It comes with an AI wallpaper generator, Folax Voice Assistant, and Folax Translate.

Both phones have the promise of getting 2 major OS updates and up to 36 months of security patches.

Build Quality/Design
- The two are well-crafted machines with different design philosophies. Both are using faux leather back covers and metallic frames.

Both feels premium for the price

The main difference is the Infinix NOTE 40 Pro+ 5G uses a 3D curved sandwich construction while the realme 12+ 5G opted for a flat boxy type design.

The NOTE 40 Pro+ 5G unit I have is the Vintage Green with faux leather material, but you can also opt for a smoother Obsidian Black finish. In front, it has a  55-degree 3D curved glass protected by Corning's Gorilla Glass 5 protection which may help in the display from surviving up to 1.2 meters of drops and unwanted light scratches.

It also has an IP53 water splash and dust resistance rating to somehow protect it from sweat or rain.
Curved or flat?

Meanwhile, the realme 12+ 5G also has a faux leather back cover and my unit is also in the Pioneer Green colorway. The front panel is just a tad curved, but it is protected by a 0.55mm Double-Reinforced Glass that gives its display a good chance of surviving accidental drops and preventing hairline scratches. The IP rating of the phone is IP54, slightly better than what the NOTE 40 Pro+ 5G has.

Infinix NOTE 40 Pro+ 5G measures 164.28 x 74.5 x 8.09 mm while the realme 12+ 5G measures 163 x 75.5 x 7.9 mm. The two weigh 196 and 190 grams, respectively.

As mentioned, the two are well-built phones with designs that punch above their price points.

Team flat or curved?

The device from Infinix could be for those who prefer a curvier look. Plus, even if it is technically thicker at 8.09 mm, it looks slimmer in real life due to its curved edges. We noticed that it has slimmer bezels for a more immersive viewing experience as well.

On the other hand, we won't blame you if you want a phone with a simpler look like the realme 12+ 5G.
The displays
The displays

Multimedia Experience - In front, the two are packed with high-quality AMOLED screens. The two have up to 120Hz refresh rate, up to 360Hz touch sampling rate, 2160Hz PWM dimming, and FHD+ resolution.

These two are packed with high-quality AMOLED screens

In real life, both are rich in colors with similar overall performance. The display of realme is just a little brighter, but it is hardly noticeable even for outdoor use. We find both displays great for consuming content on YouTube, Netflix, and even gaming.

For audio, the two have stereo speakers that can go quite loud with minimal distortion up to around 70 percent volume. Both have similar loudness levels and are comparable in quality by default. Infinix partnered with JBL to tune the speakers of this device and I think it shows as it was able to compete with a pricier phone like this realme 12+ 5G.
The cameras
The cameras

Cameras - In the camera department, the Infinix NOTE 40 Pro+ 5G features a bigger 108MP f/1.75 main shooter with OIS. It is paired with 2MP f/2.4 macro for close-up snaps and a total of 4x LED flashes.

Meanwhile, the realme 12+ 5G highlights the new 50MP f/1.88 Sony LYT600 sensor with OIS. It is paired with an 8MP f/2.2 ultra-wide shooter for added versatility and an extra 2MP sensor for depth sensing. It also has an LED flash.

In daylight, no problem. The two were able to take high-quality snaps that were social media-ready. realme got the image with more accurate colors, but Infinix is not to be left behind with punchy colors.
Infinix 3x zoom

realme 2x zoom
realme 2x zoom

For zooming, we enjoyed the default 3x in-sensor zoom of Infinix. It is also arguably more detailed. The realme 12+ 5G has up to 2x lossless zoom with decent quality as well.

When it comes to taking Portrait snaps, the two surprisingly did quite well. I just slightly prefer the shot on the NOTE 40 Pro+ 5G as it has a more prominent blur but can still separate the subject nicely from the background. It also showed more details on the hair of my subject.

In this close-up image test, the advantage goes to realme as it allowed me to focus on the subject better.

In the dark, the output from realme is brighter with truer and punchier colors. But, Infinix handled exposure and details a little better. It's a win for Infinix here for me.

For selfies, the NOTE 40 Pro+ 5G has a higher-res 32MP shooter and Dual Flash.

As you can see here, the Infinix NOTE 40 Pro+ 5G delivered the selfie with a wider focal length. It is also better in details, truer colors, and more accurate Portrait mode edge detection.

For videos, both are usable for casual video shooting. The two also have the ultra-steady mode with crops that work if you have shaky hands. Only the realme 12+ 5G can shoot up to 4K though.

Infinix NOTE 40 Pro+ 5G advantages - Curvier overall look, faster charging, Wireless MagCharge, better primary camera, larger selfie camera, more affordable price tag
realme 12+ 5G advantages - Flatter design, faster chipset, larger battery capacity, extra 8MP ultra-wide cam

Our thoughts

The two phones both performed well at their respective price points.

While the realme 12+ 5G is a slightly faster phone with a bigger battery and an extra 8MP ultra-wide camera, the Infinix NOTE 40 Pro+ 5G was able to compete despite being the significantly more affordable device.

There are even valid arguments that it could be better in terms of design (subjective) and cameras. Of course, the NOTE 40 Pro+ 5G also has a more advanced fast charging solution and some innovative features like the MagCharge tech.

If you want a slightly better gaming device, the realme 12+ 5G could be considered starting at PHP 17,999. But, if you are a casual user who needs a phone that just works takes pretty good images, and can quickly charge, you could save some bucks with the PHP 13,999 Infinix NOTE 40 Pro+ 5G.

The Infinix NOTE 40 Pro+ 5G is available on Lazada, Shopee, and TikTok Shop online. They also have the regular Infinix NOTE 40 Pro at Lazada, Shopee, and TikTok Shop.

Meanwhile, the realme 12 Pro+ 5G is also available at Lazada and Shopee online.

What do you guys think?
