No ARM arm license? Qualcomm will have a hard time making Snapdragon chips?
ARM recently announced that the company will cancel Qualcomm's license, allowing it to design its own chip.
Qualcomm uses ARM architecture to design its chips, including the Snapdragon Mobile Platform, which is popularly found on Android smartphones.
Reuter's source said that ARM has given Qualcomm a 60-day notice of cancellation for its licenses.
As a quick recap, ARM sued Qualcomm in 2022 after it acquired Nuvia. This acquisition enabled Qualcomm to use its own custom chip design instead of ARM's Cortex cores in the Oryon CPU found on the new top-of-the-line Snapdragon 8 Elite Mobile Platform for smartphones.
The problem, ARM said that Nuvias' ARM license cannot be transferred to Qualcomm without permission or contract renegotiation.
If the license cancellation happens, Qualcomm will be prevented from doing its own design, might have to stop selling products, or even face claims for massive damages.
Qualcomm said these are unfounded threats to Strongarm a longtime partner and increase royalty rates and its claim for termination is completely baseless.
The trial for this matter will start in December. Both ARM and Qualcomm are confident that their companies will be favored by the court.
