A new PC OS competitor

At a recent conference, HUAWEI introduced HarmonyOS for PCs, marking its expansion of the HarmonyOS ecosystem across all its consumer devices, including smartphones, tablets, wearables, smart displays, and now computers.

HarmonyOS for PC will be available on upcoming HUAWEI laptops.

The new PC operating system is built on HUAWEI's proprietary "Harmony base," featuring its own kernel, security architecture, development tools, and programming language. Unlike Android or Windows, HarmonyOS for PC is designed as an independent platform—a strategic move influenced by past trade restrictions.

Security was a key focus during the announcement, with features like developer authentication, app verification, and strict permission controls.

Additionally, the OS also includes a privacy mode that blocks camera, microphone, and location access, along with hardware-level encryption to protect data even if the hard drive is removed.

For productivity, the brand highlighted cross-device collaboration, cloud sync, and AI integration. Enterprise solutions will also be available, supported by cloud platforms and management tools.

HarmonyOS for PC is set to launch on May 19, though its adoption, device compatibility, and developer support remain to be seen in a competitive market.
