Last April 12 and 13 at j-hope's concert at the Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena, local telco giant Smart demonstrated the capabilities of its 5G Standalone (SA) 5G technology.

To recap, 5G SA operates independently from existing 4G infrastructure to provide a fully 5G connectivity experience. This technology also allows "network slicing" to optimize network infrastructure for specific purposes, including a prioritized network experience for customers in a jam-packed concert or a peak usage scenario like South Korean superstar j-hope's recent concert in the Philippines.

According to Smart, 5G-SA-capable smartphones in the venue experienced an impressive download user experience even amidst thousands of fellow concertgoers.

Smart even managed to aptly change the network ID of its SA-ready devices with
"J-Hope Concert," displayed on the upper left part of the screen for a customized experience.

Our groundbreaking Smart 5G SA technology showcase marks a significant leap forward in our commitment to providing Filipinos with a world-class customer experience. This also unlocks a wealth of amazing possibilities and immersive digital experiences meant to enrich the lives of subscribers, said Debbie Hu, Smart Head for Network Operations.

According to the company, the Smart 5G SA technology showcase builds on the back-to-back launches of Smart 5G Max and TNT 5G Max in Taguig City last December for a faster and more seamless mobile connectivity experience to customers. TNT also recently launched Max Saya 30, the first prepaid data pack with prioritized network experience.

Driven by a deep understanding of our customers’ evolving needs, all these efforts are geared towards optimizing our powerful 5G network and bringing the transformative benefits of 5G technology to the fingertips of more Filipinos, said Lloyd Manaloto, Head of Smart Prepaid and Postpaid Marketing.

The telco also said that subscribers were also able to experience Smart 5G Max from the verification process and strapping to lining up and up to the concert proper.

Some concert goers used it to update their loved ones from time to time, post short videos on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, enjoy a boosted network experience, and simply stay connected seamlessly during j-hope's concert.

According to Smart, some of their subscribers even said that their signal did not waver during the concert compared to other jam-packed concerts.

Meanwhile, BTS member j-hope performed hits "Mona Lisa," "Sweet Dreams, "More," "On the Street," and many others. Known to his fans as Hobi, j-hope also did BTS hits like "Mic Drop," "Airplane," "Ego," "Silver Spoon," "Trivia: Just Dance," and "Dis-ease."

At the concert, fans also got to pose and take pictures in the Smart 5G Max booth, which was inspired by the Sweet Dreams pop-up in New York.
