Down to just 5GB?

5GB instead of 15GB

According to the reports, this shift was introduced in March 2026 to prevent abuse and manage rising storage costs. Google has reworded its support pages from "15GB free" to "up to 15GB free."

Yes, this means that users may still get the free 15GB data. How? By linking a phone number.

Google told tech publication Android Authority that they are testing a new storage policy for new accounts in select regions to maintain high-quality service while encouraging better security and recovery.

This is currently said to be active in some African regions. If successful, the policy may roll out worldwide.

Current users are unaffected by the change.
