Samsung's new 990 SSD is an excellent solution for a wide range of users looking to expand their storage for heavy workloads, immersive gaming, high-resolution content creation, and DIY PC builds, said Tommy (Hyoungsuk) Kwon, Vice President of Memory Brand Product Biz Team at Samsung Electronics.
According to Samsung, the 990 SSD supports PCIe 4.0 and uses the company's latest NAND technologies. The 2TB model reaches sequential read speeds of up to 7,250 megabytes per second (MB/s), while the 1TB model reaches up to 7,150 MB/s. Both models offer sequential write speeds of up to 6,450 MB/s.
For random performance, the 2TB model is rated at up to 850K read and 1,200K write IOPS, while the 1TB model is rated at up to 700K read and 1,100K write IOPS. Samsung says these specifications are intended to support faster application launches, smoother gameplay, and more efficient handling of large workloads.
The added storage capacity is meant to accommodate large volumes of high-resolution content and modern AAA games. Samsung notes that the 2TB model can hold approximately 30 large-scale games, based on an average game size of 64GB.
Samsung also reported gains in power efficiency, stating that the 990 SSD consumes up to 38% less power than its predecessor, the 990 PRO, while maintaining high performance. The drive is compatible with Samsung Magician Software, which the company says supports data migration, drive health monitoring, and performance optimization.
