Redefining EV SUVs

Xiaomi EV has announced Xiaomi SkyNomad, the company's second product series. While the Xiaomi SU7 and Xiaomi YU7 series are built around "the driver's car" concept, the SkyNomad series is positioned as an "intelligent, reconfigurable, large-space SUV."

Together, the two lines represent different approaches shaped by more than five years of Xiaomi's car-making efforts. The SU7 and YU7 series emphasize the driving experience, while SkyNomad centers on the people inside the vehicle, treating the cabin as a living space that changes to suit different times of day. The new series extends Xiaomi EV's product lineup.

The reasoning behind SkyNomad

China's auto industry has developed quickly in recent years, and large six- and seven-seat configurations with feature-heavy interiors have become widespread. Space and equipment are no longer scarce in the market. What is changing, according to Xiaomi, is what buyers actually prioritize: rather than simply valuing size or soft seating, customers increasingly care about whether they feel comfortable inside the vehicle.

This reflects real usage patterns. Many owners spend up to two hours a day commuting, rest in the driver's seat, work from a parked car, take family trips on weekends, or use their vehicle as a temporary living space while camping. For these drivers, Xiaomi argues, a car serves not just as transportation but as a mobile extension of daily life.

That idea, designing a vehicle around how occupants actually experience it, formed the basis for SkyNomad's development, which began in early 2023.

A cabin designed to transform

SkyNomad is built on Xiaomi's newly developed Kunlun Architecture, created specifically to support reconfigurable interior layouts. Within an SUV body, a flat floor and a long-track seating system let the cabin shift between a driving configuration, with ample room for passengers, luggage, and pets, and several parked configurations that convert the space into a workspace, a lounge, or an area for family activities.

Achieving this required combining Xiaomi's AI capabilities, its smart-device ecosystem, and its manufacturing expertise, three areas where founder Lei Jun has said Xiaomi holds a distinctive level of combined strength.

Our answer was to let intelligence define the space, to build a living interior that moves with you," Lei Jun, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of Xiaomi, wrote in a post on Weibo describing SkyNomad's development.

Target buyers

Xiaomi describes SkyNomad as intended for buyers who want a single vehicle capable of handling daily commuting, family trips, and occasional work performed from inside the car. The company frames it not as a lifestyle product but as a flexible tool suited to varied roles throughout the day, designed for professionals and parents alike, who, Xiaomi notes, are often the same people at different points in their day.

The Xiaomi SkyNomad series, the product of three and a half years of development, is set to launch soon in mainland China. Further details are expected in upcoming announcements.
