Customize Your Algorithm!

Facebook is putting users firmly in the driver's seat of their digital experience with the rollout of 'Your algorithm,' a suite of new AI-powered tools designed to let people fine-tune what they see in their Feed and Reels using natural language.

Announced by Meta, the update bridges the gap between passive algorithmic consumption and active, conversational personalization. Rather than relying solely on engagement signals such as likes, comments, and watch time, Facebook's ranking systems are now integrating large language models (LLMs) to allow users to directly sculpt their content preferences in real time.

At the core of the update is dedicated space called 'Your algorithm,' accessible directly through the three-dot menu on any post in your feed or reels.

Users can input, add, and manage specific topics they want to see more or less of using everyday language.

When interacting with traditional 'interested' or 'not interested' buttons, Facebook may now prompt users with follow-up questions. This allows for nuanced, freeform feedback explaining precisely why a piece of content appeals to them or misses the mark.

The ranking systems are driven by advanced LLMs; the ranking systems process this natural language input instantly. Recommendations adapt within the same session, reflecting what matters most to the user right now.

Historically, social media algorithms have inferred user preferences entirely through behavioral signals, tracking thousands of data points on what content users linger on or interact with. While highly effective, this implicit approach could sometimes feel opaque or slow to adjust to shifting moods and temporary interests.

By combining freeform text processing with traditional behavioral signals, Meta's updated ranking infrastructure creates an algorithm that users can genuinely talk to. The result is a more dynamic, relevant, and transparent social media experience tailored closely to individual tastes.

The new features are rolling out globally, making it easier than ever for users to curate a more personalized and engaging time on Facebook.
