Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 or Z Fold 8 Ultra? Which one is for you?

Build Quality/Design

Ultra-premium feel and look
Ultra-premium feel and look

The Galaxy Z Fold8 brings a fresh new design.

For us, it doesn't just iterate—it reimagines Samsung's foldable identity. While this isn't the first time we've seen a similar approach, it's arguably the most refined and sleekest foldable on the market yet.

The new passport‑style form factor is shorter, wider, and arguably more intuitive than the tall, narrow folds of the past. Its 4:3 aspect ratio makes reading, multitasking, and watching content feel more natural—closer to a tablet experience while still pocket‑friendly. That’s one big reason it’s winning new fans worldwide.

The wider 5.5‑inch AMOLED cover screen is cool-looking, handy, and easy to use for typing and apps, while the inner 7.6‑inch AMOLED unfolds into a WIDE canvas that impresses for split‑screen multitasking, HD content viewing, and portrait‑mode reading.

Epitome of premium folds

Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra has the proven and tested 8-inch book-type folding screen. It is also great for split-screen multitasking, reading, and creative work. It looks and feels more like a traditional smartphone when folded at 6.5 inches.

Both new foldables are ultra-slim. The Z Fold8 is just 9.7mm when folded while the Z Fold8 Ultra is even slimmer at 8.9mm (folded) and 4.1mm (unfolded).

Samsung also explains that the new construction makes the foldables slimmer yet tougher, reinforcing display support, absorbing impact, reducing crease visibility over time, and refining hinge mechanics for a smoother unfolding motion.

When unfolded, the device is even thinner and lighter than traditional candy‑bar phones—thanks to Flex Titanium Technology, which combines a titanium alloy film with an enhanced titanium plate beneath the inner display to absorb pressure and boost structural integrity.

Both models also carry an IP48 water resistance rating, validated by Samsung's lab tests for immersion in up to 1.5 meters of freshwater for up to 30 minutes. SWEET.

The Galaxy Z Fold8 is lighter, more compact, and easier to carry, while the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is still fairly easy to hold and very pocketable, but heavier.

In my opinion, the two look extra premium compared with many competing brands.

The Galaxy Z Fold8 is available in slightly more fun Graphite, Cream, Lavender, and Pistachio. The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra has a business-person-inspired Graphite, Cream, Violet Shadow, and Green Shadow.

Display Experience

Almost no visible crease, more fun
Almost no visible crease, more fun

As expected from a company that makes displays, the Galaxy Z Fold8 Series features some of the best-looking AMOLED screens found on foldable devices—both for the cover and inner folding screens. Users will be able to enjoy punchy colors, deep blacks, sunlight-ready brightness, and even some sort of built-in anti-reflective coatings for their folding screens.

Very good inner folding screens

The Galaxy Z Fold8 has a more compact cover screen. For me, it has better typing comfort as the display keyboard is less cramped and feels more natural for messaging, browsing, and other quick tasks without unfolding. Reading website articles, manga, webtoons, and more looks bigger here as it is wider even if its height is narrower.

The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra's cover screen is taller. It is easier to hold with one hand and looks great for vertical social media content. This is good for those who like to scroll a lot.

More space for consuming content and more

When unfolded, I would use the Galaxy Z Fold8 more, as I use my folds a lot for watching videos before sleeping or while on the go. Its 7.6-inch display has a 16:10 aspect ratio, ideal for HD videos on Netflix, Disney+, Prime, YouTube, and many more, with less black borders on top and below for a more immersive viewing experience.

In Portrait mode, it is also amazing for reading websites, manhwas, mangas, and more. Split-screens here look fairly good as well.

For playing games, like Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, it would have been great if I could use the entire screen. There are noticeable top and bottom borders.

On the other hand, the Z Fold8 Ultra is bigger. It's arguably better for multi-window split screens, particularly if you like to scroll. I also enjoyed it more for viewing documents on one side while checking other stuff on the other side.

Both support Flex Mode, allowing hands‑free video calls, comfortable media viewing, and split‑screen multitasking when the device is half‑open. This makes them versatile for productivity and entertainment alike.

However, the Z Fold 8 Ultra elevates the experience. With its larger footprint, wider inner display, and sturdier hinge, it resembles a mini laptop when propped up. In this mode, the Ultra offers a more comfortable typing experience and doubles as a reliable "tripod" for hands‑free photo capture.

Performance/Multitasking

AnTuTu benchmark scores of both phones

Both are powerhouse foldable phones in specs and in real life. These devices are some of the fastest, smoothest, and snappiest folds we've tried to date.

Why? Both are packed with a 4.6GHz 3nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy octa-core processor with an Adreno GPU. This is a high-end processor capable of running nearly anything with great speeds, proven reliability, imaging support, and stellar AI capabilities.

Even in the memory department, the two are similar, with up to 16GB RAM and up to 1TB internal storage.

When unfolded, Portrait mode

In our test, both devices have similar speeds and never had issues with all our social media apps, OTTs like Netflix, Prime, and more, running an AI assistant a lot (specifically Gemini), and they could handle even some demanding games with minimal heat-ups.

Legitimate flagship-level speed and reliability

For battery, the Z Fold8 is a bit smaller with 4,800mAh (since its display is also a bit smaller), while the Z Fold8 Ultra has a large 5,000mAh battery. Even if the capacities aren't as massive as competing Chinese brands, Samsung's optimizations and its first use of SiC (silicon carbide) batteries helped these phones keep up with, and sometimes beat, other brands with larger capacities.

The two can last for a whole workday on a single charge (12-14 hours). In our looping video tests, both lasted over 20 hours at 50% brightness. The Z Fold8 Ultra lasted 30 mins more in our tests. Gaming and demanding tasks like video rendering will drain the batteries faster.

I used both devices simultaneously as either primary or secondary phones, and their standby times are among the best we’ve tested. On one occasion, I even forgot to charge the Z Fold8 for two days, yet the battery was still at 70% afterward.

Users will be able to enjoy the phone's up to 45W charging, which fills the entire battery in approximately an hour when idle. When needed, the phones also act as a wireless power bank with their 20W Wireless PowerShare mode.

The two also have a stable WiFi 7 connection, consistent 5G speeds in compatible areas, fast Quick Share (now w/ iOS compatibility), and reliable GPS. Both come with 2x nano SIM support w/ eSIM.

Both foldables ship with Android 17 and Samsung’s One UI 9.0, offering a smooth and familiar interface.

The experience is enhanced by Google Gemini AI, specifically tuned and optimized for Samsung devices, with advanced tools like Circle to Search, Live Translate, Interpreter, and generative editing features such as photo clean‑up, reframing, and text‑to‑image.

Its voice transcription and translation also work in 22 languages, making meetings easier to capture. Multitasking is more powerful with Split View, Dual App Windows, a persistent taskbar, and resizable floating windows.

Galaxy AI and Bixby act as a context‑aware assistant, managing apps and settings in one command. Apps transition seamlessly between cover and main screens, while popular platforms like Netflix, Zoom, Slack, and Office adapt intelligently to the foldable layout.

Meanwhile, the StandBy Mode provides glanceable info across both displays, and cross‑device sync ensures your history, preferences, and tasks follow you wherever you go.

Camera System

Both phones have impressive camera hardware for foldables, designed to compete even with higher‑end slab phones.

The two features capable cameras for casual users and even creators

The Galaxy Z Fold8 carries a dual 50MP setup (wide + ultra‑wide) with LED flash, plus 10MP punch‑hole selfie cameras on both the cover and inner screens.

In daily use, it's more than good enough as an everyday shooter—crisp landscapes, natural food shots, family photos, and close‑ups all come out sharp with punchy but not oversaturated colors.

Portrait mode defaults to 2x with surprisingly accurate edge detection, while digital zoom up to 4x looks solid. Video recording reaches 4K 60fps, stable enough as a backup camera in well‑lit conditions.

The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra takes imaging further. Its 200MP OIS main sensor with f/1.7 aperture and ProVisual Engine delivers livelier shots, sharper details, better dynamic range, and improved highlights and shadows.

Portraits and low‑light shots are noticeably better, making it a stronger choice for creators who rely on zoom or 4K video.

Thanks to the foldable design, both models let you use the rear cameras for selfies and group shots via the cover screen.

If you stick to the front shooters, the 10MP cover and inner cameras are decent—sharp enough in daylight and well‑lit indoors, consistent in Portrait mode, wide enough for video calls, and capable of 4K 60fps recording, though not as sharp as the rear systems.

Moreover, Samsung has refined multi‑camera creation since Director's View on the Galaxy S21. On the Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra, this evolves into Dual Recording, letting you capture both the scene and yourself at once, with both displays showing the shot.

Post‑capture, Samsung's Photo Assist uses the unfolded screen to show original and edited images side by side, turning the larger canvas into part of the editing workflow.

Our thoughts

I personally prefer the Galaxy Z Fold8 since it fits my lifestyle—ultra impressive for HD content, lots of reading, and as a reliable secondary phone (it is more than good enough as a main phone for 99% of the population). Its lighter build and aspect ratio make it more natural for everyday use.

That said, the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is the more well‑rounded choice for multitaskers. With its bigger screen, stronger multitasking tools, and advanced camera system with zoom, it's ideal for creators, mobile photographers, and anyone who needs pro‑grade imaging.

To sum it up, both are really GOOD folds. Choose the Galaxy Z Fold8 if you want a lighter, more portable foldable that's amazing for HD content, reading, and everyday use.

Pick the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra if you need a more well‑rounded powerhouse for multitasking and creativity.
