Dual camera phones, Apple iPhone 7 Plus and Huawei P9 Plus |
The P9 and P9 Plus by Chinese smartphone brand Huawei are
the flagships for its high end line. Both boast powerful dual-lens cameras
engineered in partnership with renowned German camera manufacturer, Leica.
These 12 MP RGB and monochrome sensor dual cameras with f/2.2 aperture are built
to work in tandem to enhance performance for professional grade images.
Several months later, Apple released their highly
anticipated iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus in September. Unlike Huawei however
Apple decided to let the iPhone 7 Plus to be only model to carry the dual lens
feature. These 12 MP dual lens cameras from the iPhone 7 Plus are distinct where
one lens has a wide angle lens with f/1.8 aperture and the other has a
telephoto lens (2x zoom) with f/2.8 aperture.
The two smartphones appear to on equal footing when it comes
to clarity of details and overall image quality output. Each phone however has
its own highlights and strengths that cater to the photography savvy mobile
phone user. An example is the Huawei P9 has made a name for itself as the go-to
smartphone camera for taking dramatic, cityscape shots at night with its
low-light and bokeh photo effects coupled with the dedicated monochrome lens
for crisp black and white images. The iPhone 7 on the other hand is perfect for
those medium distance shots
with its 2x optical zoom enabled telephoto lens.

With their own highlighted features and distinct features,
there is no clear winner between the two juggernaut phones. As seen above, the
iPhone 7 Plus performs better in tighter and more intimate shots due to its
software base post processing that enhances the photo automatically. While the
Huawei P9 proves to be the ideal for taking photographs with vivid color reproduction
because of the P9’s powerful flare effects and autofocus.
Apple and Huawei have set the standard for the dual camera
technology and as the competition is heating up, Samsung and the rest of the
manufacturers are expected to follow suit with their own offerings in the years
to come.
