Meet Cherry Mobile Desire R8, Capable Affordable Dual Cam?
Cherry Mobile Desire R8 |
Priced at PHP 9,999, the Cherry Mobile Desire R8 is of the legit dual camera powered smartphone in its class. In particular, this device sports MediaTek's 64 bit MT6750T octa core processor w/ Dual ISP (image processors) for real dual camera support.
It could mean that the two cameras really works together to shoot very detailed images with great depth of field.
Even if the lower-end MT6737T has Dual ISP too, MediaTek recommends MT6750T at least to enjoy dual camera setups better.
Having said that, the Desire R8 is the most affordable Cherry Mobile device in the market right now w/ optimized dual camera.
Sounds promising right? Let's begin!
Meet Cherry Mobile Desire R8
Solid build, good design |
The Cherry Mobile Desire R8 feels pretty premium and looks sleek for a midrange smartphone.
It's made out of a solid metal unibody material with smooth curves, comfortable hold, and nice heft. However, there's no mention of Gorilla Glass on its 2.5D curved display. So, make sure to take good care of it to prevent scratches and damages.
Microphone w/ 3.5 mm headphone jack slot on top |
Mic, USB Type C, and single mic below |
Hybrid SIM slot at left |
Power button and volume rocker at right |
The dual cam setup behind is protruding, but it won't really affect the overall nice ergonomics and appearance of the handset. We liked that most of its ports and buttons are on proper placements.
It even has the modern USB Type C standard for reversible and speedier charging and transfer speeds.
Colorful screen w/ slim bezels |
In front, you'll first see the 5.5 inch FHD IPS 1920 x 1080 resolution screen at 401 pixels per inch. It's sharp, vivid enough in colors, and has good viewing angles. We just noticed that it isn't that bright enough, but, this screen looks good as a whole.
Antutu and Geekbench scores |
Inside, it runs with the 64 bit MT6750T octa core chip paired with Mali T860 graphics. It's the same speedy enough chipset found on the likes of OPPO F3 and Vivo V5. It's couple w/ ample 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of expandable storage, and 3,000 mAh of battery.
Camera-wise, its one of the few legit dual camera phones under 10K. It features a 13 MP f/2.0 Sony IMX258 + 5 MP f/2.0 OV5675 w/ AF, BSI, and dual tone LED flash.
For selfies, it has an 8 MP f/2.2 S5K5E8 w/ LED flash.

The rest of the features
Smart's speedy LTE in our area and the ever annoying ads |
Software-wise, it boots with Android 7.0 Nougat w/ near stock user interface. It is fast and smooth, but lacking in features and excitement for me. Moreover, it has annoying ads that pops out once in a while.
Anyway, we find its 700 MHz LTE is super fast and stable if you have good signal in your area.
The fingerprint scanner works, but don't expect it to unlock your device that fast.
