According to Xiaomi, the new Redmi 5A has the very best camera in the budget segment. Today, we'll compare it against Cherry Mobile's Flare S6, a slightly more affordable smartphone with great cameras on paper as well.

On paper, the back camera of the Redmi 5A is ahead of the Flare S6 due. It has a brighter 13MP f/2.2 lens with PDAF versus the 13MP f/2.8 Sony lens of Cherry.
For selfies, it's a different story. The Xiaomi Redmi 5A only has a 5MP f/2.0 sensor versus the bigger 13MP OV12830 f/2.2 w/ LED flash of the Cherry Mobile Flare S6.

Scene 1 - Daylight outdoor
Cherry Mobile took the shot with brighter exposure with yellowish tint, but it is noticeably grainier, softer, and washed compared to the Redmi 5A shot. The Redmi 5A also has the crispier texture, better colors, and nicer contrast. Redmi 5A - 1 point
Scene 2 - Outdoor close-up
Both did very well in this scene. The Redmi 5A got the shot with punchier color saturation. On the other hand, the Flare S6 has slight washed colors, but it has sharper details and deeper background blur. Flare S6 - 1 point
Scene 3 - Indoor dim close-up
Again, the Redmi 5A got the more accurate and punchier colors. However, it failed to focus nicely compared with the Flare S6 in this scene. It struggled in lowlight. As a result, the shot that the Redmi 5A is softer and blurrier versus the sharper shot with better dynamic range that Cherry took. Flare S6 - 2 points
Scene 4 - Flash
Thanks to its great flash, the Redmi 5A is the clear winner in this scene. It took the photo with better colors and exposure. Sharpness is on par with the Flare S6 as well. Redmi 5A - 2 points
Scene 5 - Selfie well-lit
Both failed to get the accurate color in this scene. The Redmi 5A took the yellowish shot while the Flare S6 got the reddish snap. But, the selfie that the Flare S6 got has more natural looking details even on face beauty mode. Flare S6 - 3 points
Scene 6 - Selfie lowlight
Both struggled in lowlight. Again, the Redmi 5A got the yellowish shot. On the other hand, the Flare S6 got the slightly reddish snap. The Redmi 5A got the better exposed photo, but it is blurrier compared to the Flare S6. The Flare S6 got the sharper details and better colors for us. Flare S6 - 4 points
Verdict
Both are respectable budget camera phones. The Xiaomi Redmi 5A is for those in need of a smartphone camera with punchier colors, good outdoor performance, and well exposed flash for lowlight snaps.
But in this comparison, the Flare S6 is the overall winner in terms of camera quality for us. It can produce more details, nicer indoor and lowlight performance, and better selfies.
The overall score is 4 to 2 in favor of Cherry Mobile Flare S6.
