Unboxing/Accessories

The classic Dash Charge compatible Thick Red USB Type-A to Type-C

The OnePlus 6 comes in the familiar white and red Box from the OnePlus phones. In fact, we think it is the same box with minor changes. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Inside is the phone, documentation, sim ejector tool, USB Type-A to Type-C red cable and the Dash Charger power plug.

There are no earphones.

Build Quality/Design

The shiny ceramic like midnight black!
The shiny ceramic like midnight black!

One of the criticism of the OnePlus 5/5T was the generic hardware design which has been addressed with the glass front and back design.

The rear glass panel comes in three different designs. Mirror Black (Ceramic like reflective back), Midnight Black (Textured Matte black) and White Silk (White Reflective back with Gold Accents).

Metal and glass premium design!

We can safely say that the design is near the premium priced flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S9/9+.

Notification slider and power button at the right

The top of the frame is near barren with only a microphone while the bottom sees the removal of the OnePlus 5/5T's screws but retains the 3.5mm headphone jack, microphone, USB Type-C and the single palm firing speakers.

Another change is the transition of the notification slider from left to right. The old placement has seen been replaced with the sim card tray. Beside the sim card tray is the volume button while the power button is beside the notification slider.

The model we got was the midnight black which OnePlus boasts was coated multiple times to make it shine like Ceramic but with the sturdiness and lightweight property of glass.

The display is the best part because the bezels are nearly gone! It ate up most of the screen besides the notch on top which houses the earpiece, various sensors, notification LED and selfie camera.

There is a case that is included and it is similar to the included case from the 5T but with a different color and transparency.

Initial findings

BEAST!
BEAST!

1. The OnePlus 6 is beautiful and solid with a design that is near the Premium Flagships like the Galaxy S9/S9+. The 6.28-inch FHD+ AMOLED display is large and immersive with 1080p crispiness. Being an AMOLED display, it gives the deepest blacks and most vibrant of colors.

2. One of the few phones under 600 USD with a Snapdragon 845, Adreno 630, and RAM that starts at 6GB and storage that starts at 64GB with 3300mAh battery with Dash Charging, LTE and USB Type-C.

It is a beast for the price with only the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S and ZenFone 5Z being the few that's most affordable.

3. It boots Android 8.1 Oreo based Oxygen OS. It retains the near stock experience with added features like customisable LED notification colors, gestures and many more.

4. The rear camera is a 16MP f/1.7 IMX519 sensor + 20MP f/1.7 Sony IMX376 sensor w/ PDAF, 2x zoom, OIS, EIS, and LED flash while the selfie camera is 16MP f/1.7 IMX371.

So far, we are liking the image quality from both rear and front cameras. Though we were surprised that OnePlus again changed the configuration of the rear camera. It is a welcome change though because it now focuses on portrait mode.

5. The OnePlus 6 is nearly in the league of expensive flagships with face unlock, fingerprint scanner, LED notification, OTG, gyroscope, 3.5 mm headphone jack. It has no stereo speakers and wireless charging though.
