Vivo Y71 review

We've used the Y71 as our smartphone for more than two weeks and here's our full findings!

For our review Part 1: Vivo Y71 Unboxing and First Impressions

Display Quality

6-inch 18:9 screen

Vivo Y71 boasts of a 6-inch HD+ display with 2.5D curved glass at 268 ppi. It has slim bezels making 18:9 screen-to-body ratio.

Immersive FullView screen

Its FullView screen makes an immersive experience while playing games and watching K-dramas. It also has the 'one-hand' option that makes a smaller screen and can easily be accessed via a gesture.

It has a resolution of 720 x 1440 pixels per inch. Just like the usual budget smartphones, it has a nice sharp display for its price. Its color accuracy is fine and natural-looking.

You might get a little difficulty when viewing your photos or text messages under direct sunlight even if you turn its brightness to the highest.

Vivo Y71's HD+ display has 10 points of touch.

Audio Quality

Vivo equipped their latest budget smartphone offering with a single loudspeaker and one microphone.

The only speaker of the Y71 produces nice sounds but expect some sound distortions when cranked up to the highest volume. It is loud enough considering the sound comes from a single speaker only.

Its single microphone works well with phone calls and recordings but makes some 'hiss' sound on video recordings.

Battery Life

Stellar battery performance!
Stellar battery performance!

The Vivo Y71 is packed with a non-removable Li-Ion 3360 mAh battery. Our battery benchmark test result shows that it can last for 11 hours and 48 minutes.

We also used the Y71 as one of our smartphones for over one week. It lasted for 10 hours only under heavy usage that include: texting, calling, use of LTE, playing 3D games like Angry Birds 2 & Clash of Clans, and WiFi.

For charging, the Vivo Y71 can be full charged under 2 hours using its pre-packaged wall-charger.

The Vivo Y71 3GB RAM variant is equipped with 13MP f/2.2 main shooter and 5MP f/2.2 selfie camera.

Love the HDR shots!

Although it is an entry-level smartphone, the Chinese smartphone company equipped it with a "professional" option in taking photos. Of course there are the basics: HDR, bokeh, panorama, and the latest A.I. beautification.

Y71 can take decent quality photos on well-lighted areas, indoor, and even low-lighted areas with the help of the soft flash. Its HDR feature captures photos with sharp and crisp details that definitely needs no any post-editing!

Meanwhile, its front camera has the basic features of HDR, bokeh, A.I. beautification, and filters. However, its level 6 beautification might over beautify you.

It captures nice selfies on well-lit places and indoors. As expected, it captures grainy photo quality on low-lighted areas.

It's nice that the Vivo Y71 is equipped with the latest Android 8.1 Oreo with 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 quad-core processor.

Snappy enough experience!

Opening and closing apps are snappy and throughout our test, it didn't give us any lags. It has a 16GB internal memory and is expandable up to 256GB via dedicated microSD card slot.

We tried to run the PUBG Mobile but unfortunately the device won't load the game. Instead, we loaded the Y71 with the classic Burger Shop 2 our childhood played on us.

The smartphone's thermal management is fine that it does not get alarmingly hot while using the LTE with high brightness.

Vivo pre-installed the Y71 with Facebook, and WPS Office. It also carries the familiar 'Game Mode' feature in Vivo smartphones when enabled, can get you an undisturbed gaming experience.

Its face unlock is fast and responsive both in well-lit places and in low-lighted areas. However, we wished that Vivo still equipped the Y71 with the Fingerprint sensor for another security option.

Overall, Vivo Y71 has a strong GSM signal for SIMs, WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS.It also has LED notifiction, OTG, and dual SIM slots.

Pros - 18:9 HD+ screen, Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box, respectable cameras, HDR camera quality
Cons - no fingerprint sensor, not on USB Type-C

Verdict

Vivo Y71 2018 took a nice leap over the Y53 launched last year. But, it is also pricier than what we expected.

It has a minimalist design, sharp display, good cameras, superb battery capacity, and overall great performance.

The Vivo Y71 3GB RAM variant retails for PHP 8,990. You can also get its cheaper sibling with 2GB RAM for PHP 7,990.
