The 12GB low power double data rate 4X RAM was first loaded with the Galaxy S10+ and Galaxy Fold. The mass production of this RAM module will be for premium smartphones. It was achieved through the combination of 6 16-gigabit LPDDR4X chips wherein 1 chip is equal to 2GB of memory. It is based on 2nd generation 10nm-class process which promised up to a 10 percent power reduction while maintaining the same data rate of 4,266 MB/s.

Now, the four channel package can easily achieve a data rate of 34.1GB per second. It also allows smartphones to maintain a slimmer design since it has more 20 percent reduced thickness compared to the 1st gen package.

Distribution plans

Samsung said that they are planning to provide more the triple the supply of its 1y-nm-based 8GB and 12GB mobile DRAM for the second half of 2019. This is due to a high anticipated demand for bigger RAM modules.

This means is we can expect a shift in terms of minimum RAM for flagship smartphones. We may start seeing flagships sporting a minimum of 8GB of RAM during the second half of 2019.
