Huawei's WiFi Alliance and SD Association membership now suspended

Aside from Google's Android ban and more, Huawei suffered another setback. The company's WiFi and SD alliance membership are now suspended.

More bad news for Huawei

WiFi Alliance is the one who sets standards for wireless technology. The group which include Apple, Qualcomm, Broadcom, and Intel said that it had "temporarily restricted" Huawei's participation in activities.

Huawei also disappeared the member list of the SD Association. SD Association is known for developing the standards of the SD Card, the most popular memory card format used in portable devices.

The reason? In compliance to Trump's blacklisting last week of the Chinese tech giant last week.

Huawei also voluntarily decided to withdraw membership to JEDEC, the group which sets semiconductor standards. JEDEC include Qualcomm, Xilinx, Samsung Semiconductor, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., SK Hynix and Toshiba Memory, HP, and Cisco

On May 17, 2019, Huawei Technologies notified JEDEC that it had decided to voluntarily suspend its membership in JEDEC until the restrictions imposed by the U.S. government are removed, a JEDEC spokesperson told Nikkei

These new developments could deliver a serious blow to Huawei as it will not have a say on the standards for future technologies as long as its membership is suspended.

Huawei could still develop their own standards though. In fact, Huawei developed their own NM card that's smaller than the current microSD card standard. The company could still use the current standards as well.

But Huawei is still hopeful that this situation will be resolved. The Chinese tech leader also said that they are working to find the best solution to these issues.
