Google Nearby Share's features

Google Nearby Share is part of Google Play Services which means that most Android will have the feature once it launches. XDA even said that someone managed to activate it on a OnePlus 7T Pro.

The feature will be found in the Quick Settings panel and settings of their Google Pixel devices used in the demo. Once you enable it, you can choose the Google Account you will use, change the display name for your device, and device visibility. There are three options for visibility settings. You can either have your device visible to all of your Google contacts, select contacts, or you can have it hidden to always have a prompt whenever you are receiving a file.

You can also manage how mobile data is involved with Nearby Share. You can either use mobile data for smaller file transfers, WiFi only, or no internet usage involved. Nearby Share will use Bluetooth for the device handshake and location services for determining nearby devices.

The distance for Nearby Share usage is stated to be one foot to avoid random file sharing. Using WiFi to transfer files is fairly quick. Once you receive the files, a dedicated folder will be created on your device. During the demo, there was only one failed attempt where the other device did not connect but transfers of photos and videos are very fast.

Samsung is also making its own Airdrop-like feature called Quick Share as well as realme, Vivo, OPPO, and Xiaomi will also have their own service exclusive to China.
