Unboxing/Accessories
Inside the box |
Build Quality/Design
Backside |
The Huawei Y7 is made of a combination of premium polycarbonate, glass, and glasstic. In between the glass and glasstic back is a premium polycarbonate frame that is solid yet lightweight.
The glass panel in front and the glasstic panel on the back curves on the side to make the phone easier to hold but both are fingerprint magnets.
There is no mention of glass protection and water resistance. Putting the included case in the package should prevent your phone from getting damaged from accidental drops. The pre-installed screen protector is a welcome plus as well.
Front side |
At the back of the Y7 are the dual rear cameras, fingerprint sensor, Huawei branding, and regulatory information. While in front is the large 6.26-inch HD+ IPS display with a notch on top.
Budget phone with premium look
On the upper-right side of the bezel, you'll also see a neatly hidden soft light LED flash. On top of the notch, you can find the earspeaker.
The phone measures at just 158.92 x 76.91 mm despite the 6.26-inch display due to its slim bezels and notch design. At 8.1 mm, the handset is also considered as slim.

Initial findings
1. The display is a 6.26-inch 2.5D curved IPS screen with a 1520 x 720 resolution at 269 ppi. 720p is still acceptable but it would have been great if it had a 1080p panel. The panel supports up to 10 points of multi-touch but it is not mentioned if it is Gorilla Glass protected.AnTuTu and Geekbench scores |
2. Under the hood is the 14nm Snapdragon 450 octa-core processor, Adreno 506 GPU, 4GB RAM, 64GB of internal storage and a large 4,000mAh battery.
The internals were able to produce a score of over 90K in AnTuTu, 148 in Geekbench's single-core score and 860 in multi-core tests.
It isn't the highest chip at this price point, but it offers 4GB of RAM and 64GB storage which is seldom at its price range.
The 4,000mAh battery with the chipset and 720p display is expected to last all day. The included charger is a 5V/2A charges through a micro USB port.
EMUI 8.1 based on Android Oreo |
3. Running the show is EMUI 8.1 based on Android Oreo with Google services. This means that it is one of the few newly released Huawei phones that has access to Google's ecosystem. BUT, it also has HMS and the Huawei AppGallery.
There is no word yet if it'll be updated to at least EMUI 9.0 or 10.0 yet. Let's hope.
Camera app |
4. For cameras, it has a total of 3 cameras. The rear dual camera set-up is made up of a 13MP f/1.8 main camera, a 2MP f/2.4 depth sensor camera, and an LED flash.
Included camera modes include Aperture, Beauty, Photo,
There is no ultra-wide camera, telephoto camera, macro camera nor is their Night mode. This is acceptable given the price point, but there are some devices like the realme 5i has a better camera set-up for the price.
For the selfie camera, it has an 8MP f/2.0 shooter on the notched display. It supports Aperture, Photo, video and Beauty modes. It is also impressive that it has a selfie toning flash.
5. At the back of the phone is a fingerprint sensor. The Y7 also supports GPS, GLONASS, dual SIM, and Face Unlock.
