Ahead of its launch, we were lucky to check these new devices. It includes the Reno5 5G and Reno5 5G.

In this article, we will share with you what we initially thought of these phones. Let's see how better they are than the capable Reno4.

Read on.

Unboxing/Accessories

Reno5 4G and 5G boxes
Reno5 4G and 5G boxes

For the first time in years, OPPO changed the box of their phones for the Reno5 series. It is minimalist yet attractive at the same time. This style reminds us of the modern boxes from their sister company OnePlus. The difference? The color is mint green, not bright red.

Inside, identical. Both phones arrived with a small box containing the paper documents, SIM ejector tool, and a clear flexible TPU case. Then, you will see the phones with a pre-installed screen protector.

Underneath, you'll see the power brick along with the USB-A to USB-C data charging cable and the earphones with microphones.

The power bricks they are using are powerful yet small at the same time. Reno5 4G uses a 50W SuperVOOC Flash Charge wall charger while the Reno 5 Pro 5G arrived with the 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 charger.

This is a pleasant sight as some "premium" brands are slowly removing the in-box chargers in an "effort to save the environment".

Build Quality/Design

The OPPO Reno5 4G arrived with a textured back cover in either Fantasy Silver or Starry Black colors. The Fantasy Silver version has a similar glittery detail with fingerprint smudge resistant texture. Its back design is similar to the Reno4 except for the slightly larger camera island with the bigger camera rings. Reno5's Fantasy Silver version also changes colors depending on the angle or lighting hitting it.

Slightly upgraded design and look coming from the Reno4!

The two are using identical cameras on paper. The 64MP f/1.7 w/ PDAF + EIS + 8MP f/2.2 119-degree ultra-wide-angle + 2MP f/2.4 macro + 2MP f/2.4 mono + LED flash quad-cam setup.

Meanwhile, the Reno5 5G is available in Galactic Silver, Starry Black, Astral Blue colorways. The unit we have is the Starry Black version. There's a 3D curved glossy glass finish at the back.

In the front, the two phones are super similar. Both are using a 6.4-inch 2.5D curved AMOLED screen with an extra smooth 90Hz refresh rate, 180Hz touch sampling rate, FHD+ resolution, and a single top left-aligned punch-hole for the selfie camera. Reno5 4G uses a 44MP f/2.4 shooter while the Reno5 5G is equipped with a 32MP f/2.4 selfie cam.

The upgrade here coming from the Reno4 is the two are now sporting a slimmer chin bezel. The result? Both have a 91.7 percent screen-to-body ratio that is higher than the 90.7 percent screen-to-body ratio of Reno4 2 punch-holes.

In the display specs, the difference in their displays is the peak brightness. Reno5 4G has 600 nits while the 5G version has 750 nits. Reno5 4G has Gorilla Glass 3 protection. There's no mention if Reno5 5G's screen is protected as well. We will check and confirm with OPPO as soon as possible.

The frame is similar at first look. But, Reno5 5G's body feels a bit more solid than the body of Reno5 5G. This is understandable as there's a significant price difference between the two phones. The two don't offer any sort of water resistance. That is confirmed as both didn't come with a rubber gasket in the triple tray slot.

Button and port placements are identical. Both have a mic on top along with the speaker grille, USB-C port, second mic, and 3.5 mm headphone slot below.

On left, you'll find the pinhole to open the triple tray slot (dual SIM + 2x nano SIMs) as well as the volume up and down keys. On right, you'll see the power key.

They don't have stereo speakers though.

The two phones are slim and lightweight for better comfort. Reno5 4G measures 159.1 x 73.3 x 7.7 mm and weighs 171 grams. Reno 5 5G measures 159.1 x 73.4 x 7.8 mm and weighs at least 172 grams.

As of the moment

So far, the two look good. Both have stylish designs. Both have great screens. Both have promising cameras with plenty of features. Both have super-fast charging speeds. Both have the much-improved ColorOS 11.1 skin based on Android 11 OS.

Personally and obviously, I find the Reno5 as it is the more "now-and-future-ready" device due to its use of a faster 2.4GHz 7nm EUV Snapdragon 765G octa-core processor with 5G connectivity to be more attractive than Reno5 4G's 8nm Snapdragon 720G 4G chipset.

However, we find it weird that the more affordable Reno5 4G has a better up to 960fps Slo-mo. Reno5 5G has the Film mode where you can enjoy manual video controls with stabilization though.

We will be checking its cameras and real-life performance in the coming days. See you in our full review.
