A video shows that a Xiaomi phone launching Huawei's HarmonyOS that may hint a possibility of being used by other Android devices.
After Huawei encountered several issues when the Trump administration enforced a ban that prevented US companies to perform transactions with it. In spite of the situation, the Chinese tech giant is gradually migrating its devices to HarmonyOS.
To recall, Huawei made the HarmonyOS (HongMeng) official at the HDC 2019 in Dongguan, China. It is a new microkernel-based operating system designed to work on different devices such as smartphones, smartwatches, smart screens, in-vehicle systems, smart speakers, and more. HarmonyOS supports Android applications.
To make it attractive to developers, Huawei released HarmonyOS as an open-source platform, worldwide. The company is also laying the foundations for HarmonyOS in the Chinese market and then expands it further to the global ecosystem. It will also capitalize on China's strong app ecosystem and massive user base.
There are claims that the OS will bring "incredible new benefits" to consumers, equipment vendors, and developers. For consumers, it is expected to bring a "cohesive and powerful intelligent experience across all aspects of their lives". For equipment vendors, it should help them gain a "first-mover advantage in the age of holistic intelligent experience".
One Xiaomi user has managed to download HarmonyOS 2.0 on a Xiaomi smartphone with the MIUI user interface. Note that this is still not a full-fledged installation of the said operating system. There's a big chance that the developer only aims to show that HarmonyOS can run into any Android device.
In the video, the operation of the operating system is still not demonstrated. It simply shows the launching of HarmonyOS on the Xiaomi phone. When turned on, the Xiaomi and MIUI logos appear on the smartphone screen, as well as the Powered by HarmonyOS inscription.
If mobile phone manufacturers in China find it necessary and useful to install HarmonyOS, then there's a danger for Google losing its audience in that country.
No confirmation yet from Huawei about this report. Stay tuned for updates.
