First some gameplay! We played some COD: Mobile and Genshin Impact to showcase the performance of the ROG Phone 5.

COD: Mobile settings

In COD: Mobile, we aimed for maxed framerates while maintaining most of the graphic fidelity. After one round of COD: Mobile, we were able to take advantage of the high framerate. It made reacting to enemies easier and smoother while the dual stereo speakers immerse you in the game allowing you to hear footsteps and more.

Genshin Impact settings

In Genshin Impact, we were able to take advantage of the air triggers for remapping some of the commands like attacking, special attacks, and abilities. We opted for the Smooth Medium settings for a balance of good graphics and smooth framerate. It maintained a smooth 30fps all the time. The speakers also enhance the gameplay with an immersive audio recreation.

Great build and design

1. Build and design - The ASUS ROG Phone 5 features a more refined design that still maintains the essence of previous versions. Before, the ROG Phones feature an aggressive, gaming device design with lines and protrusions that is too eye-catching and distracting for most users. This time ASUS was able to make it maintain a gaming feel but more streamlined. The accents are more muted than before.

The body is made out of high-quality materials with a metal frame plus a sandwich of Gorilla Glass Invictus protected front panel and glass back. You can feel the heft and solid build every time you hold it. Of course, dropping or other accidents may still cause some damage. But overall, it is a beautiful and solid design.

2. 144Hz, 1ms FHD+ display - It features a 144Hz 1ms Samsung display panel with FHD+ resolution, 1,200 nits peak brightness, and 100 percent sRGB color space coverage. This is one of the best screens for gaming in the market today.  Yes, higher resolution screens are available but for gaming, the faster the refresh rate the better. High-intensity games require faster reactions and the 144Hz + 1ms response rate allows you to play at a high level.

It also has WiFi 6E and support for the tri-band connection. ROG Phone 5 is also designed to cool the Snapdragon 888 with the Aero Active Cooler as well for longer gaming sessions.

The fast charger does not heat up the device too which is very impressive. We were able to play COD: Mobile for 5 hours straight in a single charge too!

5. Front-facing speakers - The front-facing speakers of the ROG Phone 5 have great volume, clarity, and range. ASUS was also able to give it a little bit of a sound stage as well. This is one of the most impressive speakers that we were able to experience on a smartphone. DXOMark also graded as the best speaker at the time.

Customizable controls

6. Ultra-sonic and cooler buttons - Once you install the Aero Active Cooler, you get two additional buttons or triggers. It also has two ultra-sonic buttons that can all be mapped for different games. In the advanced settings, you can set other additional function there's two. You can also do the squeeze gestures to activate Google Assitant and Performance mode. 

You can also customize the ultra-sonic buttons for different inputs namely Tap Controls and Swipe Controls. You can also do two segments for each button to provide you two more extra inputs. You can also customize control setups for different games.
